nickb800: Compared to stock, Pioneer headunit + four entry-level Sony/Pioneer/etc speakers will definitely sound a lot better. You can spend more and get better, but there's gonna be a point where you can't notice the difference/rarely use the power

I can't possibly agree with that. You've got to realise that the power figure quoted on head units is peak power - the 50 watts x 4 is actually about 18-20 watts RMS. Decent speakers with an amp is going to sound *way* better.

I think you've misunderstood me. Yes better speakers + external amp will sound better, but it's a case of diminishing returns. I'm suggesting that the OP and geekzone think about where diminishing returns will kick in here, given that the OP has spent some length of time driving around with a stock head unit + speakers. An entry level headunit + speakers will achieve both of his stated goals - louder and clearer - and deliver an improvement over the stock setup. An external amp will definitely make things louder-er and clearer-er again, but is this necessary for the OP?

Within 6 months he will want more, installing a new headunit and entry level speakers is like going from a hamburger to a cheeseburger, components + amp + sub is like going to a Quarter pounder.

While diminishing returns will usually kick in at the Mac Attack Combo level.

Anyone willing to swap out headunit and speakers obviously likes music enough to go through that exercise and the difference $$ wise between a cheeseburger and a Quarter pounder isnt that much if you intend to keep the car for a least a year (you can listen to alot of music in a year).

Forget about the rear speakers and go components in front, treat the doors while you're in there. Treble and mids will never sound any good from the factory speaker position.  Add an amp if or when you can.  Then if you want to punch up the bass throw some 6x9s in the back, and add a sub.

6x9s in a ute? Fair bit of work to put them in doors, and won't really be enough of a cavity to do them justice. You'll only get under seat subs in a ute, even if you can build something yourself.

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.

Thanks for the discussion, it's been very helpful. My plan at this stage is to

a. get a good set of components for the front ~250 (and treat the door)
b. get a good 2din headunit ~$350

I will do that, see what I think and then probably get

c. a 2channel amp (or 4ch if I'm thinking of going down the sub route - which I probably will)

Then look into getting either

d. a 8" enclosed sub to fit somewhere (which will mean upgrading or getting another amp.) or
e. a underseat sub

I am at odds a little bit over the headunit at the moment.

I have really struggled to find the spec for the blaupunkt stock headunit I have now. I've looked through the au commodore site and blaupunkt with little success.  If the current headunit has the same/similar specs to a starter aftermarket headunit then I would consider sticking with it.

Anyone know a bit more about the spec for the blaupunkt etc?

The factory headunit almost certainly won't have amp outputs.  You could start with the speakers and see how it is.  Then upgrade the headunit sooner, or just upgrade it when you add the amp.

Yeah didn't consider the ute thing with the 6x9 suggestion. The good thing about a small cab is that whatever sub you can squeeze in will be more efficient.

Considering I'm getting a good set of components I'll probably go all out and just do headunit+amp at once,

It's a twin cab so not that different from a regular car unfortunately, a little bit smaller though!

2din is expensive way to fill a factory hole, you can get 1DIN pockets for about $20. Unless youre after something specific in 2din ie GPS navigation, DVD or reverse camera its money better spent on Amp and Speakers.

Cloud spending continues to surge globally, but most organisations haven’t made the changes necessary to maximise the value and cost-efficiency benefits of their cloud investments. Download the whitepaper From Overspend to Advantage now.

Yeah I know, I don't think I could live with myself getting a 1din with how the console is setup, would just look terrible . Compared to a 2din looking badass :D
