turnin: The transition between partially aided driving and full autonomous cars will be....interesting.
I wonder how it will effect people who hop out of partially assisted cars and then hop into a non assisted car, eg tourists / weekend drivers etc.
I bought a couple of mazda 2's the other day, $24K cars with 6 speed manuals, blind spot warning, auto lights, high low beam, auto wipers, reversing radar, traction control, you name it. These things are becoming standard on very entry level cars, it also has electronic brake distribution which makes for outstanding turn-in when left foot braking and accelerating at low speeds. Considering it has road tyres on it it's quite amazing, They only weight 1000 kilo's, for another 3K each I could have had full radar which brakes for you when the car in front stops, but here's the catch, it only works up to 40km/h ! Above that it wont even try.
I never thought I'd say it but I hope the transition to full autonomous vehicles is very fast and does not leave too many people uncertain of what behaviour to expect.

Fully agree. Subaru NZ are missing a golden opportunity. As all of the secondhand car dealers have made Subaru a mainstream brand in NZ. Due to the number that have arrived as secondhand imports from Japan. Because of this parts are easy to get, almost every mechanic is used to working on them. And all at no cost to Subaru NZ. There are probably alot of people who grew up with these used imports. And who are getting older, and now have enough money to afford brand new / near new cars. All they need to do is give them what they want and they will buy.
My guess is that Subaru NZ is probably selling the same as what is available in Australia. But secondhand jap import cars are not easily available over there. So there won't be the same demand. from people wanting what is available in Japan.

I used to be that way.
But you know what? For driving on the road a modern car with driver aids is better for almost everyone, almost all of the time. I started out with only wanting to drive manuals, then finally I decided I'd get an auto but wanted a decent tiptronic, but ended up getting a decent auto and it's just better. Same with ABS, VDC and I am sure with the new features in my next car I'll love them too.
And I'm a driver too. I love it. I have a Lotus 7 replica that I race and I have driven a real F1 car among many other nice cars...
But for 99% of my everyday driving? Comfortable, quiet, lots of driver aids and many airbags please.
Cheers - N
