Driver aids give you more control, I love all the kit on my new car although the blind spot warning and lane departure warning can get a little annoying around the city.

ilovemusic: i hate this sort of new tech that takes the joy out of driving.

call me old fashioned but i like to be in control of the car all the time.

driver aids need not apply.

next they'll have cars that can drive themselves...

tongue-out

I used to be that way.

But you know what? For driving on the road a modern car with driver aids is better for almost everyone, almost all of the time. I started out with only wanting to drive manuals, then finally I decided I'd get an auto but wanted a decent tiptronic, but ended up getting a decent auto and it's just better. Same with ABS, VDC and I am sure with the new features in my next car I'll love them too.

And I'm a driver too. I love it. I have a Lotus 7 replica that I race and I have driven a real F1 car among many other nice cars...

But for 99% of my everyday driving? Comfortable, quiet, lots of driver aids and many airbags please.

Cheers - N

I went and had a look at the new Outbacks a few weeks back but didn't take a test drive as i'm not yet ready to purchase.  I liked the tech mentioned above but felt it intruded a bit into the cabin.  I guess you would get used to that lump on the roof.

Was disappointed you can't get the 6 cylinder model NZ new.  I have a 2003 imported boxer 6 and absolutely love it.  Always wanted a Legacy and chose it partly based on hunting extensively and establishing (in my own mind) that it was the most trouble-free engine but still with a bit of oomph on demand.

The transition between partially aided driving and full autonomous cars will be....interesting.
I wonder how it will effect people who hop out of partially assisted cars and then hop into a non assisted car, eg tourists / weekend drivers etc.
I bought a couple of mazda 2's  the other day, $24K cars with 6 speed manuals, blind spot warning, auto lights, high low beam, auto wipers, reversing radar, traction control, you name it. These things are becoming standard on very entry level cars, it also has electronic brake distribution which makes for outstanding turn-in when left foot braking and accelerating at low speeds. Considering it has road tyres on it it's quite amazing, They only weight 1000 kilo's, for another 3K each I could have had full radar which brakes for you when the car in front stops, but here's the catch, it only works up to 40km/h ! Above that it wont even try.

I never thought I'd say it but I hope the transition to full autonomous vehicles is very fast and does not leave too many people uncertain of what behaviour to expect.

I suspect it only works at lower speed for safety, as for something to automatically brake you at over 40km could be dangerous, especially if a false detection occurred for some reason, and the car just suddenly stopped. But I suspect most of these nose to tail crashes occur at lower speeds. The mazda 2 is an interesting vehicle, because it is very highly spec, for was was their shopping cart or old persons run around car. The new cx3 is based on it's wheelbase, but is quite a bit more in price.

Fully agree. Subaru NZ are missing a golden opportunity. As all of the secondhand car dealers have made Subaru a mainstream brand in NZ. Due to the number that have arrived as secondhand imports from Japan. Because of this parts are easy to get, almost every mechanic is used to working on them. And all at no cost to Subaru NZ. There are probably alot of people who grew up with these used imports. And who are getting older, and now have enough money to afford brand new / near new cars. All they need to do is give them what they want and they will buy.

My guess is that Subaru NZ is probably selling the same as what is available in Australia. But secondhand  jap import cars are not easily available over there. So there won't be the same demand. from people wanting what is available in Japan.

I am no car economist... But i don't know a single person who's bought a legacy sedan brand new. They all buy the wagons. It beats me ...

Apparently the new Outback is the same price as the outgoing Legacy wagon. With that in mind why would you want a Legacy?

Couldn't agree more. My car is my workplace for weeks at a time sometimes and given the lunacy and generally low standard of the driving we all see out there, I'd drive an M1 Abrahams if the gas bill was more reasonable!

The more things that protect me and my passengers from harm, the better. I hope never to require them - in 4 years of driving my current vehicle, the VSC, ABS, BAS etc have never been activated in anger, which is fine by me - but I love knowing that they are lurking quietly in the background.
