The mazda 3 2014 model is a significantly different car to the 2013 model, so not the best guide to compare. Apparently it is better in everyway, with less road noise and a smoother ride, without the smiling face grill. With the toyota, it is a smaller less efficient car, and when comparing specs I think you will find the mazda beats it on most areas.

I've driven both the 2013 model (my old work car) and the 2014 model and agree that the difference is quite substantial. I've noticed that parallel parking between the 2013 model and 2014 one is quite a bit different too (maybe because I was used to the 2013 model).

perfect timing for this thread, just about to choose between these two myself, although can't afford that new Mazda 3 model :(

To buck the trend on this forum, I'm trying to get to a price from a Toyota dealer at the moment for a Toyota hatch 2013, Auto, 50,000km GLX. Yard price is $19,990. They're saying they will only take $500 off.

Anyone care to advise what you think I should be trying to push them for? I'm a novice at this. Shouldn't they be able to do 10% (2k) min or am I dreaming?

Is that the new generation model or the old one, as it looks like it changed in 2013. I would buy the new one if you can as the resale should be better, otherwise in 6-7 years time if you sell you could be selling a 2 generation old car. See what the prices are on trade for a similar spec'd vehicle with same kms. Seems around 20k is aorund the sticker price.  Playing one against the other is the best way to negotiate. Also you may have more bargaining power the closer to the month you get, so now is quite  a good time.

After many threads in this forum, I am starting to look at a Mazda 3 as my next car
The only issue is of course price - I am not quite up there with being able to afford $35k ($25k is my limit, including assistance)

However I do see there is a 0% finance offer on new 2015 Mazda 3's with a 30% deposit which is easy enough to afford.

So many decisions .. test driving one would probably help

There is likely to be a facelift model for the 2016 year, whether this is released later this year or next. I susect it may add in some of the safety features into the lower models, as the design is pretty fresh. So they may have a runout when that happens. But 32k is quite a good price for what it is. I would personally go for the sp25, as I do a lot of hill driving, which has better types, and more power, plus the heads up display which is a really nice feature with the turn by turn gps on the headsup.

for who ever in the market, pls dont get fooled by 0%, 1%, 1.99% finance offers. there is nothing called free lunch and similarly there is nothing called free finance.

What it means is that the manufacturer has given its margin to the finance company.

If you think you can save money, save first upfront and negotiate with salesman to give bottom dollar. if not auckland, go outside, may be hamilton, or even wellington till u get the good price.

if you dont have cash upfront, it simply means you cant afford it , just take time to save for it.

I think it is best to separate the finance from the purchase transaction, likewise don't do a tradein, as that also complicates the purchase. Buying just the car alone makes it a nice simple transaction, and get the finance elsewhere if needed.
My friends basically saved $10k by doing this, as they sold the car privately and made 6k more than the dealer offered, and they saved about 4k on the sticker price on the new car. I wouldn't be surprised if the dealers make more money selling tradeins, than they make on new cars, without all the other addons like front parking sensors, special coatings to make it easier to wash etc. They were some of the upsells on the mazda.

Normally not one for finance offers (preferring to save until I have the dollars), I actually can't see any reason NOT to go with 0% finance, if the end cost is basically the same
- ie, I could accept an additional $1000 "fee" if it means that I get a few extra months to save up that last little bit of money required

However, my first step is to actually test drive a few hundred vehicles and see if any suit
Outside of my own car, I have driven a 2007 Mini Cooper S (would not purchase), a 2014 RAV4 (would not purchase), a 2014 Toyota Corolla (maybe) and a 2015 Toyota Yarris (would not purchase)

Just remember if your buying new from Mazda and probably any other dealer they can drop the car out to your house and leave it with you for a day so you can see if it works within your life.

Don't be afraid to take it for long test drives, you won't get the feel of it by driving around the block.

P.s we bought a 2012 Mazda 3 in the weekend. Pretty happy with it but it does have it niggles and missing a few things that i thought a 2012 car should have e.g. turn my lights off automatically when i turn the car off or even have the radio metadata text come up on the stereo. It's a GLX and not a SP25 but it should have those things.
