Aredwood: Just pay for the proper full synthetic oil. As alot of cars 2005+ need full synthetic due to having exhaust particulate filters. And / or exhaust gas recirculation. As cheap oils cause the engine to produce ash ect as small amounts of oil get burned as part of the engine operating. This blocks up the particulate filter, exhaust gas recirc system, and inlet manifold. If these parts need cleaning/ replacing it will be very expensive. A new particulate filter will easily cost over $1000 just for the part only. And lots of labour involved to remove , clean and reinstall the inlet manifold and EGR system. All for the sake of spending an extra $50 every 6 months or so. (Cost difference between full synthetic oil and cheap mineral oil). And you would probably recoup that $50 through better fuel economy anyway.

Are you referring to existing diesel engines? AFAIK gasoline particulate filters on direct injection engines is emerging tech not mainstream yet.

Go with the grade Honda recommends, and TBH $80 for 4.5l of synthetic oil is not that bad, it is also cheap insurance. What is the service interval?

BTW second hand dealers definitely don't always service the cars they sell.

As far as who to service the car use an MTA approved mechanic, and that should be enough to keep your warranty in place, but check this with them first.

Did you get breakdown insurance? If so as above make sure you use an MTA approved mechanic.

Krishant007: Yup the car is second hand (2012). The car is still under warranty until August this year.

Normally I just go to one of the local mechanics and get them to do their thing. I did contact Honda and they said this car has no outstanding services left on it.

Anyone know if Honda normally provide servicing during its 3 year warranty period (like all other car dealers do)?

Can anyone recommend a trusted mechanic that they personally use and would recommend (decent price and nothing extravagant).

Thanks for the note that the servicing agent is approved - would not have looked out for this otherwise.

While it is under warranty, it would be best to use a Honda agent to make sure that there are no warranty quibbles.

After that, I would recommend Apex on Porana Rd, Glenfield. Since you bought the car in Albany, I guess that you are not too far away from Glenfield. I use them all the time and they do a fine job for a fair price.

I am actually based in Ellerslie. A friend of mine found the car at the albany toyota car yard. Gave them a call this morning - they didnt do any servicing, just a pre mechanical check. Called up Honda - costs $322 for their servicing (they dont include any when you buy the car brand new unless you do a deal with them - as pointed out earlier). I also asked if they have any other recommended Mechanics, they said yes - all Honda Service Centres (pretty much themselves and thats it). I guess I will get this servicing done by them in order to have peace of mind.

They do have services packs for 3 - 5 years. I might ask them about this and see what these include, might be a better path so I do not have to keep hunting down for decent mechanics all the time (cant believe its so difficult to find a good mechanic who is not overly pricey). But you do get what you pay for i guess.

Think my 10,000km service was just over $220 including the parts/fluids, saved about $50 for that, and takes about 1.5 hours

i got a heap more done at the same time (100,000k service + groom) so it was a whole day exercise for me.

ohh good tip. I was ready to drive down to hamilton to check out a few cars there as i have heard that they are a lot more reasonably priced there (it seems the same is true for servicing).

I will have a look at that. Cheers for that option.
