haha yeah its under 5k,tongue and cheek really.although it is a fantastic car and was owned by a lady owner who spared no expenses on it and paid 40k in cash for it lol.
I have receipts dating back from purchase and man she paid sooooo much for it.The workshop would have made a fortune

I have a Primera SW and think it is a great small family wagon.
Great for kayaks on top. I got a very low km 1.8 auto, and in hind sight should have bought a 2.0 as there little fuel saving, and more power would be nice when fully loaded up.

Moving a Fridge? You don't put those in the back on a car do you? I always transport fridge/fridge freezer on trailer in upright position. I've been told of possible refrigerant loss, but found this advice online;

"Never move the refrigerator on its side or back for any reason. The oil in the compressor may flow into the cooling tubes. When the refrigerator is returned to an upright position, the oil may not completely drain from the cooling tubes, and the refrigerator will not cool properly."

lxsw20: Toyota didn't get OBD2 in Japan/NZ until about 2000. You can pull codes on cars pre 2000 by bridging a couple of terminals on the diagnostics connector, which flashes the codes on the CEL. Not standard OBD2 so not android compatible.

The 1997 Toyota Caldina GT-Ts and up all have OBD2.

If you want a wagon that will leave a Legacy twin turbo behind a nice ride and all the room in the world, get a GT-T. The Legacy is nicer to sit in than the GT-T and has a nicer interior, but a well looked after GT-T will be more reliable.

You won't be getting any fuel economy though, and both need premium fuels if you want them to last.

CV joints, boot handle and VSC are problems in the GT-T. Manuals didn't come with traction control. If you're a performance junkie, you'll need to watch the boost on the 4th generation Caldina motor as I've seen countless people split their block in two.

The Legacy will eat it's own headgasket if it dosn't eat the gearbox first. It's common to find GTs with headgasket work done. They also like to blow primary turbos.

You'll be hard pressed to find a good manual GT-T for 5K. You can get a decent Legacy GT for 3K.

Yeah i had a legacy gt.I owned it for a whole 3 months and in that time it cost me 2.5k so got rid of it very fast

Wow, you guys know many things about cars :)

Head gasket is serious issue. Even afraid to ask how much will cost head polishing in NZ. Probably easier to change a car.

Will definitely check out Nissan Primera as well, sounds promising.

About fridge... It's hypothetical thing. Just some big domestic stuff. I don't normally take a fridge in a boot :)

I suspect Celica was perhaps meant to be Delica - a Mitsubishi van?

+1 for P11 Primera. I put 200,000+ km on a sedan P11, with no major issues.

Agree that old subarus should be avoided. They are lovely vehicles when new but mechanically complex, so when things start going wrong it gets expensive fast. Buy at 5 years sell at 9 years is good rule of thumb for soobies.

I assumed they went fairly cheap, considering my college just purchased a Legacy GT with new turbo, new headgasket, all receipts...etc. It's a 5 speed manual too, but the gearbox has a pretty poor reputation for going bang.

That is a problem with turbo cars. You don't buy a turbo car to drive like a nanna. You drive them to have fun and thrash the crap out of them.

Huh my Primera is a 1999 P11 wagon (WQP11) with QG18DE engine a conventional 4 stage auto, I avoided early CVT transmission for obvious reasons. I've had it 6 years and only done basic servicing myself, except coolant and brake fluid replacement when I bought it.

The 2.0 SR20DE is the engine of choice.
