You need to be really selective with travel insurance - shop around, read the fine print.

There is a lot of variation, and what you need coverage for depends on where you are going.

Domestically I don't bother.

If I was going on safari in Africa, I'd have very comprehensive insurance

I tend to disagree with this slightly. From the many policies I've looked at the differences are very minor. Virtually every policy out there is going to give you pretty much identical levels of cover for 99% of the things people do. It's the minor differences that can be critical - things such as the ANZ rental car exclusion.

I still find it amazing the number of people who travel without travel insurance. Yes in some other countries (Australia being a classic example) you're going to get good basic medical care for no charge if something happens. But injure yourself in the US and you'll find it a whole different scenario, not to mention the liability issues you will face if you've injured somebody else in the process.

speaking of Australia: my mate was in the GC 2 weeks ago doing some under water motorised machine thingy. as she surfaced a boat came by and kindly mushed up her entire arm.

6 hr operation: free

helicopter ride to hospital: $50,000 aussie (not free)

did she want to buy travel insurance? no
did she buy insurance? by accident yes

am I going to buy insurance next time I go to Oz for a fun trip? YES!
