mdooher: Funny thing is this speed is reached by motorcyclists quite often. But they don't die or kill others. That tends to happen a lower speeds.

Might be the law averages I suppose, but it might also be something else.

Apologies if I'm misinterpreting this, but are you implying somehow that it's OK to ride at >260km/h on occasion?

I'm suggesting that it is no more dangerous than say doing say100km/h on the Auckland southern motorway while texting.

Don't get me wrong, get caught, get done for dangerous driving..because it is.

I think both doing 260kmh and texting while driving are foolish - but let's be real, how often does anyone survive coming off a bike at 260kmh, compared to crashing at 100kmh in a car?

Well I hate to comment on a ghoulish topic but
a) there are a fair number of those accidents
b) they tend to see something coming cannot stop and hit at lower speed.
c) this is often very bad..

Proberly Just someone  who opened the throttle up for a blast bit on a canterbury backroad. Not expecting police to be around. This time of year bikes are getting a dusting off. The road on Kaitorete Spit, near birdlings flat is often used for a top speed blast by bikes.

Lol Yes.  Also alot low flying birds. A change to gravel towards the end for the unfamilar. Generally they check the road first. Have mates along the road watching too. Its a stopoff one the christchurch to akaroa "Raceway". Of course the police are onto it over the summer

I stopped riding many years ago - the last bike I owned was a Guzzi 850 Lemans in the early '80s.  That was claimed to be capable of a genuine 135mph, I did wind it out to read 140mph on the speedo (was imported from the UK, so had an MPH speedo) on the Cant'y plains one day, but it took rather a long time to get there. It was however a very nice bike for the time for a leisurely cruise at 90-110mph.  Of course if you wanted something faster than that, there was plenty of choice, but most not really my cup of tea.  I did borrow a 1,000cc bike and go for a ride with the boys a few years back, Chch to Akaroa and return, enjoyable but convinced me that no - it would cost me either my life or my license.  Couple of occasions passing a line of cars, then glance at the speedo to see +200kmh on the dial, it happens very quickly indeed these days.  Those lads refer to "the 300 club", with tricked-out bikes, GSXRs, Hayabusas etc reported to have exceeded the 300kmh mark, somewhere.
