Thanks guys for all your interesting stories regarding car insurance companies:)

Yes, alasta, I agree, one has to look past the premiums and see what is being covered.  The prices I have quoted are for:
- no one under 25
- brand new car
- no insurance history (first year insurer)
- windscreen replacement without excess
- roadside assistance

So far, most companies have a $250-$300 excess.

Fingers crossed for ASB!!!  Hope they can give me the magical figure I am after with all the right conditions:)

AMI is definitely the BEST insurance company in NZ - hands down.

I am in UK and to insure my piece of crap car worth £200 pounds - it's costing me about £300 a year and that's with an extremely high excess PLUS only third party

I have got quotes of up to £1000

But in NZ, I would only go with AMI for all insurance covers - even tho if they are more expensive

cokemaster: Same here. I have 3rd party with AMI and I found that they were the cheapest at the time... for a reasonably new driver and mid range car :)

The only thing to be careful of with AMI is that when I went to insure my current car, which is just an old runabout, I was advised against taking out third party insurance because I don't have off-street parking at home. Apparently AMI's third party policy won't cover you if your vehicle is stolen while parked on the street outside your normal residence.

I suspect that a lot of people are at risk of being caught out as a result of not knowing this.

I'll have to check that, as I'm fairly sure I wasn't advised that and didn't see it in the documentation.

I was considering full insurance, however as I'm a reasonably new driver some of the quotes (from westpac, asb, state, aa, etc) were enough to buy a fairly aged second-hand car.
