I am another one who hates these built in navigation systems in cars...well the ones that are provided by money grabbing 3rd parties...Our CX5 has the TomTom maps and if I want to update these (just once, can't get a subscription etc), it costs more than if I was to buy a TomTom device with lifetime maps subscription....they are having a laugh....so in our case, navigation is never used on the builtin device and we just use the apple/google maps navigation from the various phones in the car (and now avoid anything from TomTom as a matter of principal :D) 

Good luck with the upgrade though - I too am hopeful that manufacturers start to think about these things from a consumers perspective.
