From my experience comparing the 2.0 version of the Petrol and Diesel in the VAG range of the same vintage, the diesel is miles better (pun intended)

Why would you say the petrol is better?

It depends on what you do with it. I find my diesel a bit rough at low speeds with the throttle open, but that doesn't bother me because I don't use it around town. On the highway there is absolutely no perceptible difference in refinement compared with a petrol engine, even when under load.

Comparing the VW Golf 2.0 FSI and TDI. Circa 2005-2007.

I've tracked our fuel usage for the last few years on fuelly, this'll give you a good indication of what to expect from a TDI and a GTI.

Costs over and above normal servicing:
Golf: Replaced Turbo & Throttle body (under warranty phew), Door lock, battery
A3: Replaced PCV and DV valve, inlet air temp sensor, 4 coil packs and the fuel pump cam follower (all common parts to replace on TFSI engine), brake pads and skimmed rotors.

We have had a 2.0 Euro diesel wagon for 5 years here is my conclusions:

If you do more than 14kms per annum and or tow get a diesel despite the current RUC regime being unfair
If you want power going up hills get a diesel
Be more concerned with who you use for servicing [that applies to any vehicle]

Note if you are eco conscious note that VW got caught blatantly cheating emissions that said it is likely all manufacturers [including petrol] were doing that to some extent. On that note Z Energy will soon have B5 biodiesel available

Cars drove slightly different distances so worked them to doing 10,000KM each. Insurance skews the results a little as I'm a higher risk ...

Golf Insurance: $1170
Golf RUC: $620
Golf Fuel: $761
Golf REGO: $230

Total: $2781 ($0.28/KM)

A3 Insurance: $988
A3 RUC: $0
A3 Fuel: $1880
A3 REGO: $134

Total: $3002 ($0.30/KM)

Obviously missing tyres, servicing etc, but those are usually equal, so really the diesel wins by a few hundred a year, not much

Why would you say the petrol is better?

comparing mk5/6 tdi/tsi, gtd/gti

the petrol engine is freer revving, has better performance and the petrol cars handle better.

Only thing is you could find a similar sized car to the A3 of the same sort of age that has similar power but is more economical which would push the fuel usage down a little.

No servicing on a diesel will be higher. The other thing to consider, is that diesel is that there is currently quite a bi price gap between fuel costs, but a few years ago, the prices were a lot closer. The other thing to consider is resale, people maybe less willing to buy an older diesel, than petrol, especially are european one.

A very good point regarding the price gap, the other day I got diesel at 59.9 from Gull :)

In regards to servicing personally I haven't found servicing costs much higher if at all. Get a quote on servicing the same car petrol vs diesel you may find not much in it [well at least that was the case with mine]

I haven't seen any difference in servicing costs, may be an historic thing. When diesel prices were higher the RUC costs were lower so it balances out. Before the adjustment to the registration costs it was again even closer between the two fuel types.

Something I have noticed though is that you can drive a diesel hard and it makes little difference to the economy, drive hard in a petrol and you can really tell the difference!

yep i am being involved in the industry, but to be honest VW own how many car brands? plus i have family that work at vw plants in germany. i agree i wouldnt trust any car company on emissions.

i dont think we do enough KMs for it to make a huge difference either way, if I was doing high KMs id go the diesel though. i have owned a lot of diesel 4wds in Aus, 100 series and Nissan. Engine breaking is fantastic when towing. Not sure that really applies to small tow loads though.

so looks like a simple petrol engine. am also considering the focus durotec.
