I saw a Tesla Model S driving around Wellington the other day. I've not seen one in the flesh before but felt it was pretty sharp. Reminded me of a new shape Mazda if i'm honest... certainly didn't stand out like the BMW i range does.

Yeah needs to be better but realistically could replace a lot of vehicles at that price. The next generation could displace the Prius from some markets.

877km's from Etihad Stadium, Melbourne to the Sydney Opera House via the M31 though Wodonga, Gundagai and Goulburn where the Supercharger stations are.

I saw a grey Model S P85d yesterday parked outside the library in Wellington, and you're right it does have a touch of Mazda to it

I'm not sure what the Supercharger stations are like in Australia, but in the US I think they're generally paired with a diner or similar facilities. The idea being that you have a bit of a break from driving with a cuppa & something to eat. Once done, your car is also refreshed and ready to go.

So rather than seeing the range as a barrier to long distance travel, I see it as a way to encourage safer driving practices.

A 30 minute break every 320km (say, 3.5 hours) is probably not a bad thing, assuming there's a cafe (& toilet) handy to the recharge point.

It's a good start, but the range needs to be better, ideally by 50%.

Hmmm... 50% increase on 320km would get you 480km, which is still a bit less than (I think) most decayed-dinosaur-powered cars. My car gives me about 530km from Full until the light comes on, with probably 50km or more remaining. So I'd say a 50% increase would be minimal rather than ideal. Especially if recharge points are thin on the ground.

The designer of the Model S (and Model X) is Franz von Holzhausen, he worked as the top designer at Mazda before joining Tesla in 2010.

But the design of the Model S predates the Mazda 6 2013 model... So don't think there has been any theft involved on Franz and Teslas part.

I think the Model S has some design similarities with Jaguar XF, but sitting inside it and seeing its wide backside in the rear view mirror it felt more like sitting in an american muscle car.

It varies and varies greatly depending on what you're doing with the car. Air conditioning and heating are particularly range sapping. The specific range is based on a standardised calculation but in practice you'd get far more or far less depending on your driving conditions and the condition of the battery. When a degraded battery can take you 400km while the air condition is on full is when range anxiety disappears.
