The warehouse has bikes for $99,

Bikebarn doesnt have sales every other week no as they got done/warned by the commerce commission, so their prices are also low. Could probably get something brand new for around the 400 mark, i did see one that was $450 which looked ok.

another thing that bugs me in NZ is bike servicing, Im sure not all shops are this lax. but they dont even write down what they do or what they have replaced. if you went in for a vehicle service you would expect that so i expect it from good bike mechanics they guys who have actually spent the cash investing in getting certification.

she has her bike serviced at what was suppose to be a good shop in Mt Eden, firstly they didnt provide and invoice stating the work done, secondly the price was more than she was quoted. i feel like writing a nocowboys review. maybe they were good once, but when she picked the bike up she asked if it had any major probs and what work was done, the guy couldnt answer the question. pretty slack.

if its the one I think it is I had a problem where they did more than asked so now I make sure they only do what is required.

There are a heap of places to ride in Auckland if you aren't conbfident on roads. There is a bike path that starts from Beach st and goes all the way to Massey. There is also one going from Southdown across Mangere bridge and you can go most of way to airport through Ambury Park. Tamaki drive is a great ride, head into town and follow the coast around the tank  farm, under the bridge, Herne Bay though to Point Chev and then come back on cycle path which youy can get on accross road from AUT.

I find Auckland roads fine just need to make sure you can be seen and don't do anything that puts you at risk. Also be aware you share the road as being considerate usually meets with a wave.

Auckland cycleways

As to bikes, always found trade me good for second hand bikes but stick to known brands and do some research. Getting a mountain bike is a good choice as it suits a lot of riding, if its just road work get some road tires as they are pretty reasonably priced. If buying new do a lot of research as you may get something that suits you now but if you decide you want to do more it gets expensive. Likewise buying something expensive then leaving in the garage is equally expensive.

Just some of the cycleways are absurd, like the new one on beach rd, the built a bike path so pedestrians could walk, but now the pedestrians are using the bike path because they dont even have no walking or bike path signs up. i know auckland has nice places to walk but the council does a .... job of implementing them.

My Fav will always be the city to Kohi ride/skate. The one in Orewa is pretty good although it gets a bit average at the back end.

Worth checking out the Evolution cycles Reid Condor.  Someone at work got one, seems to be a decent bike (for the price) : http://www.evolutioncycles.co.nz/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=36335

thats a beauty for a begginers road bike considering the gear on it. nice one. only a small left though.

unfortunately i can only ride up right due to disc issues anyway. ive grieved and let go of the need for speed and still enjoy cycling for exercise, with the correct form is actually quite good for the back. besides, speed, thats what motocycles were made for :-)

seen a couple of comfort touring bikes used, wont rush into it. will fit the the narrowest tyres the rim will take if they are worn and give it a service.

There is a reason why consumables are called consumables - you wear them down. Now I don't do road cycling, coz I've had things try to kill me, but with that in mind ... no way you can have proper tyres used daily over 7 years. They must be made of really hard compound, in which case you wouldn't want to be out when it's wet, or you will break something between the collarbone and the wrist ...

Otherwise, yes I'd look on trademe, options aplenty. People usually sell their bikes in the middle of winter for peanuts.

thanks all ive seen some damn cheap raleigh and those brands hybrids on the net sub $100. to be honest thats all i need, get a tune, replace some parts, might get it all up under $200.

these are the tyres i was reffering too. who knows how far that guy who said he used them for 7 years rides lol. they are pretty quick for not being full slicks and the designs seems to be good for water, vs knobblies when pumped hard on a slippery corner, now that collar bone brackage ouch.

watch the video, quite interesting stuff. i saw on one website an average of like 4.8 from 500 odd reviewers.
