We almost got an ix35, but in the end got a six month old Nissan Qashqui for something like $30K - they're about $35K new. It's great, big enough but not too huge, wife (bit under 5" tall) likes it. Base model has all the modern bits you're looking for. CVT works really well, and even though it's bigger and heavier than my 2003 Corolla it uses a fair bit less petrol. It's powerful enough that when you need it, it's there. The diesel probably has 4 wheel drive, not sure as we got petrol. Higher up models have all kinds of interesting features, which I might actually spring for next time. I'm really impressed with the quality and performance of the Nissan.

Yeah, I've looked at that Nissan and thought it was quite an interesting vehicle. The boot space looks pretty small (tall and not very deep) not sure how my dog would go in there. My impreza can fit a kids bike and a dog in it without the seats down.

That's a useless family car, the X-Trail is what you're after. Depreciation is phenomenal so should find a decent one. (Sold mine for about 50% off list after 3 years) I had the boxy one, got rid of it, they now have a rounded one. That is much better.

+1 for Outlander.

These 2 should fit in your budget. But if you want real AWD you need a Subaru. But costs a tad more to buy and a lot more to maintain. And ugly.

I love my ix35.  It was a fair whack more than $30k, though it is the Limited.  It's been superseded by the 2016 Tuscon.

I personally like the look of the landrover evoque, would be interested in feedback on that.

Geektastic:

The Evoque is a dire car in my view. A triumph of form over substance!

I (don't) wonder if the designer of that knew the polarising opinions it would generate, and regardless of that went ahead with full knowledge that some people are so desperate to stand out from the crowd, they'd buy almost anything with the right badge on it - if it was "distinctive".   Even more dire, people owning/driving such hideosities are prone to make negative comments about how boring cars like corollas are, that supposedly being a reflection on how unimaginative their owners must be.

What a strange comment to criticize the look of one car whilst criticizing people for not liking the looks of another.

What?  I express my opinion about taste all the time, and in my opinion I'm always correct.  Nothing strange about that at all.

You missed a most crucial point of course - that anybody who drives an Evoque automatically disqualifies themselves from offering a valid opinion on good taste in cars - it's closer to an own goal than willingly driving a fiat multipla - at least they're cheap and practical.

What about a Ford kuga? Parents recently bought a diesel titanium, quite a substantial car, drives well, plenty of usable power

Me? No I have a Fast as BMW 335D Wagon, which is why, if I am driving the new car on family trips, I don't want something awful :)

The Tiguan only carries groceries in the boot. Family trip? Forget it.

I have spent $2700 on an Outback for headgasket failures and the Warranty company has spent a few more grand more. They car still runs rough and it's been on good synthetics.

Definitely ditch them before they hit 140,000K's. It's roulette after that.

As for the new one's with the CVT, they have great get up and go but are limited for towing. The CVT saves on weight. That's all they are on these cars for. Fuel consumption has always impressed me with Subaru and their AWD. But that's it, definitely not their engines.

As for the CVT, there is a filter the size of half a coke can in these transmissions that can only be replaced having the transmission removed from the vehicle. Dumbest idea I have ever seen in my life. It's not worth the fuel savings.

I really don't understand the logic in this after they and moved the engine oil filter to the top of the motor - the best idea I've seen in my life.

I have other friends that swear by Subaru, but they all have less than 140,000K's on them. My Nissan is 20 years old with well over 200,000K's and will see more than 300,000. With no engine removals or over-hauls of engine parts, just ABS from no using it enough.

Can't say the same for Subaru.

Fast forward to 2:35. Way to go Subaru https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34hS9691L04

The new subarus have FB engines which do not have the head gasket problem. But yes it has a new CVT problem.
