freitasm: It sounds more like the person in front stopped on purpose. Not a medical emergency, not a problem with the car. Stop finding excuses for some inconsiderate driver on the road folks.
There is no evidence to support either theory definitively, and surely it's worth considering giving the benefit of the doubt.
He did say that the driver put his hands up in the air as a reaction. So it does sound like they were trying to create an incident. I wonder what would have happened if the OP didn't brake in time and hit the vehicle in front? . People slamming on their brakes when there are others behind, I believe is dangerous driving, unless there was a legit reason for it. I would report it to the police, so they can investigate, and find out why the driver did that. Otherwise they may do it to someone else, and the result maybe worse. Maybe there was a legit reason, such as a problem with the vehicle, but it is up to the police to find out..
