freitasm: It sounds more like the person in front stopped on purpose. Not a medical emergency, not a problem with the car. Stop finding excuses for some inconsiderate driver on the road folks.

There is no evidence to support either theory definitively, and surely it's worth considering giving the benefit of the doubt.

He did say that the driver put his hands up in the air as a reaction. So it does sound like they were trying to create an incident. I wonder what would have happened if the OP didn't brake in time and hit the vehicle in front? . People slamming on their brakes when there are others behind, I believe is dangerous driving, unless there was a legit reason for it. I would report it to the police, so they can investigate, and find out why the driver did that. Otherwise they may do it to someone else, and the result maybe worse. Maybe there was a legit reason, such as a problem with the vehicle, but it is up to the police to find out..

I would've just undertaken in the left lane, this sort of thing's a common occurrence on my drive on the Waikato Expressway from Hamilton to Karapiro. People are meant to keep left, but many don't.

The problem is that dreamers who do the 80 in the right lane will wake up when you are just about to get past them and decide to move left without looking. Had that happen a few times between khyber pass and the tunnel where people decide to go really slow for some reason.

I used to get "extremely frustrated" at other drivers most days while driving around Auckland until I read that road rage is like drinking a bottle of poison and expecting someone else to die. That really changed my perspective and made me realise that the person in the other car is probably oblivious to what happened and Im the only person whose blood pressure is rising. Now whenever someone cuts me off, pushes in...insert offence here, I just make up a story that the person is on the way to the hospital or late for a job interview that will save their house and marriage or some other extreme event. Sounds stupid but I'm perfectly calm now. I often choose to drive in the slow lane and look for opportunities to let people merge in etc. Slow down people and enjoy the view :)

All the near misses I have had would have got close to nothing useful on a dashcam, I would need to get 4 of them around the car and I am yet to see any addon systems that do that.

Unfortunately the majority of New Zealand drivers exist in their own world, where they are the center. As I've aged, I've come to realise that other drivers on the road are idiots and to treat them as such. Don't expect courtesy, but acknowledge it when it's shown.

The road code does state that you must kept left - something which is unfortunately not policed.

You can lodge a formal complaint - nothing much comes from it, however if a driver consistently has reports lodged against them, then these reports are used to determine whether the driver is someone that needs special attention.

I would say in the future, indicate, pull into the left lane and overtake (undertake!) them. You'll feel better when you get to where you are going - and even better you should get to where you are going.

I generally agree. The exception I would note is on busy urban motorways where there are frequent on / off ramps. If you're going through, it's best to avoid the leftward lanes as they are where people are trying to merge on or merge off the motorway. If you are in the leftward lanes try to leave a gap of several car lengths, especially as you approach on / off ramps....as there will be cars coming down the ramp and if they have nowhere to go you're going to have to come to pretty much a full stop to let them squeeze in. That's avoidable completely if people drove with even half a brain....but most people don't. Similarly, you get the people who stayed in the right lane 'too long' and now have to change lanes to the left 2 or 3 times to get to the off-ramp lane. If they have no gaps to move into......everyone has to slow down or even come to a stop as they make the attempt. Then there are are the idiots who can only ever merge forward to "be in front"...and they can't simply fall back into a gap. This kind of behaviour also slows everyone down....and the one car length "saved" is lost 20 times over by slowing everyone down. Generally, leaving a good-sized gap allows other drivers opportunities to change lanes and to move around and that improves flow overall. The drivers who think one car-length is all they need at 100kph should be ruled off the road for good.

Driving around the motorways in Auckland it's clear that 90% of the people on the road have barely a clue......so best to keep a big buffer around yourself and allow for them all work out their destinies without hitting your car. Or better yet, learn the back roads and avoid the whole mess. It's a bit slower, but often not that much slower.....and the drive is much more enjoyable...plus if there is a prang on thei motorway and it's all-halt for 2 hours.....you're not in it. Going slower also saves fuel.....so you might lose 5 mins, but you save 20% of the fuel you might have used going faster.

No need to rage. Just relax. You'll (we, anyone) get there sooner if we stop trying to be "fast" in these faux ways.
