Off topic but I really hate it when I order an Uber and find its a hatch (a la your Leaf). I was sitting at a cafe on Mt Eden Rd and saw 3 tourists with their luggage waiting on the road, saw an Uber pull up (a hatch) and after a few minutes it had to drive off without them as they could not all fit with their luggage. I believe Uber requirements are to fit 4 passengers, so when you can't fit 3 + luggage then perhaps your car is too small to be offering the service.

I'm guessing they were on their way to the airport so I do hope they didn't have problems because of that.

I had the same thoughts.

The biggest (and so far insurmountable) problem is that the Transport authority in NZ require the police check to be submitted directly to them not via the person asking for the endorsement. UK privacy laws prevent the police from supplying a requested (i.e. not as part of an actual criminal investigation or other specifically permitted enquiry) record check to anyone but the person requesting..

But to do it legally you have to have a P endorsement on your drivers license. It seems most Uber drivers don't.

I think to say most don't is just blatantly wrong.

I've never caught an Uber in NZ that didn't have their P endorsement ID on display. I'm aware of people who have done many months ago so there clearly are/were drivers that simply took Uber's word rather than going through the legally required process. Having said that the NZTA did write letters to every Uber driver reminding of them of their obligations after their string which resulted in some drivers of Uber and taxi's (the Police never disclosed any split between them) being forced off the road for operating illegally.

If there are still Uber drivers operating without P endorsements after the many stings and warning letters it's certainly the minority, and you'd really have to question anybody who's still willingly doing it without a P endorsement.

I was basing my assessment on a recent onboarding session where almost no one had a P endorsement (yet?).

It would be great if you're right.....though the police check from unstable, war-torn countries as a pre-req is an issue for many people.

It's a 21st century corporate buzzword, it was known in my day (and yours, I suspect) as induction training.

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

Ah. The 'old expression' uses two words with known meanings. The 'new expression' unnecessarily turns an adjective into a verb....

From what I can tell pretty much any car would be struggling to contain 3 people and 3 large suitcases. Sounds like those people should have called a limousine service or a shuttle. Any taxi with a Prius or Camry would have probably also failed to carry them.

Onboarding has been recently used at my work to describe bringing new customers onto the service. It seems an appropriate metaphor.

Induction training is only a small part of the process - for Uber or most other contexts. I think this is what the term is trying to embrace - all aspects of beginning some kind of relationship as a shared journey.

Almost poetic, really. I can easily understand how this might make more literal types feel uncomfortable. ;-)

You are either in denial or being obtuse as it doesn't suit your purpose. A Camry can comfortably hold 3 suitcases. A Prius is tighter but doable if you stack them. It's an extremely valid comment and if a taxi (which is of course what uber provides )turned up unable to carry luggage I'd be very unhappy.

You couldn't get 3 tourists worth of baggage in a commodore let alone a camry... 3 suitcases, carry-on luggage. Not even 3 large suitcases in a boot.

In fact last time we used a cab (2 of us with 2 large cases) after coming back from NZ, our carry-on had to be inside the cab with us.

After that we used a car service. Only just fit in a Statesman.

When I pick my 2 kids (7 & 13) up from the airport it nearly fills the boot of my 7 series with 2 large cases and 2 rollable carry-on bags.

You'd get none of this in the boot of a prius... Maybe a camry (uncle had a Prius and now has a camry) if their boot was completely empty (never happens with a taxi, there's always something in there) and you'd still have carry-on in the cabin. And that's only 2 passengers.

What are you carrying? We've fitted 4 suitcases in a Camry for personal travel and when a group of us travel for work we routinely fit 3 people and luggage in a variety of taxis. We aren't carrying mega suitcases but they are normal sized cases.

My point is that you need to be able to fit reasonable amounts of luggage in a taxi boot.

Forget it... Couldn't be bothered arguing. Deleted my post.

I said large suitcases... the types a tourist would use, not people going away for a couple of days.

Uber decides on those parameters. The customer has the option of calling the driver to ask these questions and cancel if not suitable. That's all really.
