After the CHC eq there were entire fleets of sucker trucks driving around on aus NSW plates and wider area. Likewise bore and drill testing units. If its a specialist vehicle needed to do a particular role/task or testing it appears they can come in on that caveat without needing a NZ registration.
1eStar: Yeah I noticed a 'skid' about 10km long in the centre of the lane of the SH between Pahiatua and Eketahuna. Coincidence?
Funny story about that "skid"
It actually has nothing to do with the original topic of road testing, and much more to do with a right-royal screw-up. If you'd looked very closely at the skid, you woud have noticed it had the odd yellow mark near it.
It was originally a thick yellow line, painted down the middle of the road by a road marking truck. They apparently left the "paint a no passing lane" switch on in the cab, and did a great job of putting the line down the middle/slightly left of the south-bound lane! About a week later, it had been painted the grey/black that you see now to try and hide it.
