Passing lane on SH 16 (just before the bringham creek roundabout) is a perfect example of where i wish the keep left rule was followed.

The right hand side leads up to a turning right into road lane, so you will find almost consistantly you will get someone who sits in it at like 60 odd (80K road along there) happily crusing along next to their equally slow counterpart all the way up to the turning lane where they casually just merge in. Whats worse is the people who do it, only to merge back in to after the passing lane finishes!

Does my head absolutely in.

I find the streetview somewhat perfect here, Note the quite clearly slower truck in the left lane where it should be. White car joins the right lane and seems to hold up the same speed all the way till the streetview time unfortunately switches to a different year.

While there is no way to physically tell if indeed this was the same sorta situation it looks EXACTLY like it.

Kinda goes along with the folk who speed up AT a passing lane though..

Went for a drive right out to waiuku this weekend, and was amazed at the respect passing lanes were given!

They way I look at it, if you need to overtake, do it as quickly and safely as possible and move in to the left lane ASAP to let the next person past, if you can't do it quickly and safely, stay in the left lane and let others past

Very much agree with this point, although as per the roadcode last i checked... they are simply doing it the 'legal way'.

I was always taught, if you are going to do any overtake at all, regardless of location. You should complete the action as fast as Safely possible. This is something i personally live by, and have been pulled over for once unfortunately - My mistake, i did not Identify the quite obviously red highway car looking straight at me..

With the road i pointed out above, i will often see police roaming up and down there catching out those who go 'too fast' never those who are asshats though so go figure...

Just cos you are passing on the left, its is still called 'overtaking'.

Undertaking is something totally different and nothing at all to do with cars (apart from a hearse I guess)

NZers also need to check their rear-views more too. If there is a car approaching then MOVE YOUR ASS!!

Just because you don't do 110 in the right hand lane doesn't make you scum of the earth. With police crackdowns and tolerance of 4 ks its no surprise that people sit in the right hand lane doin 104 to get past the trucks and towers doing 94 if they go any faster they are at risk of getting a ticket

I find myself frequently passing of the left in multi-lane situations. Typical example is some intersections that open up for two lanes yet 80% of the traffic has a fetish with the right lane. I slow down and time my approach so that I pass on the left just as the intersection is clear to enter.

Interestingly in Germany, if you linger in the outside lane too long, you will get some irate Audi or Porsche driver on your bumper, flashing their lights as a reminder to kindly mover over please sir.

I try and keep to the left wherever possible, but yesterday (in the UK, A3/M25). I found there was a lot of surface water in the left lane, so I felt a bit jumpy about aquaplaning. The road was busy but not crazy, so i stayed in the right lane quite often.

Germany is much much more complex than that. There are multiple lanes and the speed differences are huge. Don't start me on the person overtaking someone at 80-90 when you're approaching at 180. They WILL pull out and just assume that you will brake. When it's busy it's horribly inefficient and tiring to drive fast.

Germans DO overtake on the 'slower' side and it usually doesn't work that well. My belief is that there is an assumed order to the lanes, the right-most being the slowest. I just ignore those guys in their Audis when I am already being held up. I am not slowing down to get out their way if I am being held up too. Germans also aren't good at keeping their distance, or keeping to the speed limit or...

The keep left rule doesn't seem to be enforced over here but in most other countries it is, I've made numerous complaints about it to the police but they state it is but I've never heard of anyone getting tickets

On a motorway that is busy the lane that is fastest constantly changes and so passing on the left is inevitable at some point unless the you are in the right lane. I experience this every time I drive from Auckland Airport to the CBD.

I sometimes use the left lane to overtake on passing lanes, if someone is driving slowly in the right lane. I'll only consider this manoeuvre where there is a good sealed berm as well as the two passing lanes.

I've never had a problem doing this. However, many times when passing on the right I have had vehicles pull in front of me. This scares me more because the only way to go is right and that isn't always possible.

We already do have such a law...It just isn't enforced.

I live past here and I can tell you that people who need to turn right into Riverhead *need* to get over early (even if they are going slow) otherwise they will be carved up by people who don't merge back in soon enough from the passing lane. IMO this passing lane should stop well short of where it does, it is dangerous. The worst part is that over the blind crest at the top, cars can be *stopped* waiting to turn right. If I need to overtake here (ie. a truck) I do it early and get back in.

It's an interesting topic.

On one hand, the NZTA Motorway driving says ' Keep left, unless you are passing' then it also says 'Get into the correct exit lane in plenty of time'.

I can think of at least 2 separate places in the Wellington motorway\expressway\highway network where you'd be forced to undertake it a driver got into the exit lane in plenty of time:

The Aotea exit travelling north on SH1
The Melling turn off on SH2

The Aotea exit is, I'm fairly certain on a motorway, whereas the Melling turn off is more highway than motorway.

If we use the Aotea exit (Northbound) as an example, I'd be able to drive in the right lane at 90km/h, if I so wished, from roughly the Porirua exit as I'm getting into the correct exit lane in plenty of time and other drivers would be forced to undertake if they didn't want to travel at 90km/h

What about during peak traffic hours in the city? Keeping left (instead of choosing the lane based on destination) will most probably slow down traffic IMO.

A driver may drive in the right lane in the direction of travel when driving on a multi-lane road if—

....

(g) the traffic in all other lanes is congested; or

(h) the traffic in every lane is congested

What amazes me is that most people who drive cars have never looked up the laws that govern their driving. Reading the road code is only dipping your foot in the water and is a primer for learners.

Knowing the law will make you a better driver. So will knowing the mechanics of how your car works and the physics involved in keeping it on the road. If you can't be bothered to find these things out and just want to use your car "to get from A to B" then in my opinion you should not be driving on the road...take a bus.

That isn't practical at intersections like Greenlane East and Great South Road. Each lane has an arrow indicating what direction is acceptable...and in one case there are two RH turn lanes. But if you only go in the leftward lane of the two, you're clogging the lane that wants to go onto the motorway northbound...and impeding your own progress if you want to be in right lane after the turn to proceed through the roundabout and onward toward Remuera. People who know the intersection stay left for the motorway and right to avoid the motorway and cross it instead.....along with the usual twats who slow EVERYONE down (including themselves) by queueing on the right and then try to cut in to the queue on the left for the on-ramp. Their tyres should go instantly flat for being idiots.
