General rule, if its less than $80 its probably a clone with upscaling or less a chipset/guts.

Theres a dashcam thread about somewhere, that has samples of the many I've had. (DVR-027, Mini0805, G1W-CB).

They all come with relatively long cables, so for mine I've run them across the passenger visor down behind the trim into the ciggy port area. Watch your memory cards, largest bringer of issues. You would think a Class10 samsung from 1-day would be the knees. Nope, I've had 2 fail with constant writes. Transcend seems to truck on.

My $50 fixed one with wifi works great, except the wifi on it is so trashy slow that its almost impossible to get the clips off it unless you sit there constantly touching the screen on the phone so that it doesnt turn off and disconnect from the cams wifi network.

No idea why these things dont do wifi direct so that the phone doesnt give up on the network as having no internet.

Seems as soon as you go beyond 1080 or 30 fps the price goes up astronomically, but the low spec ones are basically an actioncam chipset in a different case. The one I got has no battery, just takes 12v, accessory, and ground which I got from behind the stereo. Cable was easy to route along the trim up the side of the windscreen but if you have airbags in there it might present a problem.

I've got mine behind the mirror in centre of windscreen. Tucked the cable under the ceiling of cabin and ran down pillars to under dashboard and across to cigarette lighter.
My UK focus has live cigarette socket even when engine off so bought a USB power cable extension with a switch so I manually turn Cam on off.

You can use an action Cam as dashcam but they might not include automatic record when supplied with power, motion activated recording, automatic file deletion to release memory plus other features. ?GPS tagging.

If you want a dashcam buy a dashcam

I just purchased one of these - https://www.dicksmith.co.nz/dn/buy/transcend-drivepro-200-dash-cam-with-free-16gb-class-10-micro-sd-ts16gdp200-transcend/

The Transcend brand seems pretty popular.

... problem I do have is it doesn't set the time on it from the GPS (tried fixing this the other day and didn't work)

@DjShadow

That's odd, I've got the exact same one and it seems to work fine.  You've done this, right?

I've had one that looks just like that from Trademe.

Trash. Not worth the $35.

I'm expecting I've done it wrong, can you link the instructions on this so I can double check?

Looks like the one I got from warehouse red alert a while ago. Even the bracket was junk. Think I still have the second one I got in the box unopened somewhere.

Here's a video of the file obtained off one of these. Colour not quite as bad in the original file (YouTube didn't much like the file when processed).
