The phone is mounted, and there is no law against using it for video calling wile driving. Done it heaps myself.

Sorry but i didnt mean to sound rude or anything...!

last year, my friend was getting failed in his driving exam due to his phone mounted on the windscreen.

I thought there must be a rule about it, but doesn't seem to be...

Cellphones

While you are driving, you cannot create, send, or read a text message on a mobile phone or use a hand-held mobile phone to make, receive or end a phone call. This includes accessing online services in any way.

You can, however, use your mobile phone to make, receive or terminate a telephone call while driving if the phone is secured in a mounting fixed to the vehicle and you manipulate the phone infrequently and briefly.

You can also use a mobile phone while driving to make a 111 or *555 call if it is unsafe or impractical to pull over and stop in a safe place at the side of the road to make the call.

That's interesting. The Mazda system can displays text messages and read them aloud. You can also reply, choosing from a selection of preset messages.

All able to be done when underway, through the multifunction button.

That's interesting. The Mazda system can displays text messages and read them aloud. You can also reply, choosing from a selection of preset messages.

All able to be done when underway, through the multifunction button.

Legality?

I bolded part of that for you.

Or use a tablet in the car - imessage works for that last I checked.

The phone is mounted, and there is no law against using it for video calling wile driving. Done it heaps myself.

Aside from the fact it is a ridiculously dumb thing to do, there is a law that covers that. It could also come under the umbrella of careless driving. I can't believe any right-minded person would consider this ok!

2.5 Televisions in motor vehicles

2.5(1) Except as provided in 2.5(2), any part of the image on a television screen fitted in a motor vehicle must not be visible to the driver of the motor vehicle from his or her normal driving position while the motor vehicle is in motion.

2.5(2) Subclause 2.5(1) does not apply if:

(a) the television screen is fitted in the motor vehicle only for the purpose of assisting the driver to reverse safely, by showing a clear picture of the area directly behind the motor vehicle; or
(b) the motor vehicle is a passenger service vehicle and the provisions of Land Transport Rule: Passenger Service Vehicles 1999 are complied with; or
(c) the screen is fitted as original equipment by the vehicle manufacturer and is designed so that only information relating to the navigation, safe operation and control of the motor vehicle can be displayed on the screen while the motor vehicle is in motion; or
(d) the screen is only capable of displaying text and any change to the text on the screen is controlled manually by the driver.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

A phone is not a television.The law is clearly very outdated and needs some work.

A GPS on the windscreen can in some cases also fit the definition of a television. So can a dashcam/ with screen. A reversing camera can also fit the definition of a television, maybe those are illegal too, and should not be looked at while driving.

Glancing at a GPS/reversing camera is no less dangerous than glancing at somebody on a video screen while driving.

I also glance at my kids now and again when driving too.

If you read the above you will see that there is an allowance for reversing cameras. Yes a dashcam that is actually displaying what it is recording or playing back a recordingcould be deemed a 'television' as well as a mobile phone streaming a movie or displaying a video call. The bottom line is it's all driver distraction and extremely foolish.

As long as the screen is not "fitted", then I guess there is an argument for court.

Just ask your passenger to hold the phone for you so that you can see the screen, or just position is somewhere on the dash! - perfectly legal, but far less safe.

I did notice part. But saw it as a moot point somwhat. Although I'm nominally creating and reading text message on the car display. In reality it being done via the mobile phone.

I'm not interested i getting around the law so to speak. I'd just always assumed using the text system in the car is OK. Certainly a lot easier and less distracting than using Mazda's GPS system!

Technically the above also makes it illegal to create/send text message on a mobile phone using Siri.

The law is so far out of date.
