joker97:
The Korean diesel has so much usable torque it will blow your brains out.
Really?
Recently bought a 2012 santa fe diesel, has exceed expectations goes well. Good for towing and around town, quick off the mark also. Test drove some territory diesels but they were so slooww off the mark it really put me off.
Blow your brains out, probably not quite literally, but it is good
It is an interesting comment when people say if your doing 20,000ks a year or more get a diesel. It seems to be a pretty vast generalization, the RUC's is really what stings.
The way I see it is that when driving around town stop start your consuming more diesel litres/100ks therefore your saving because your buying less RUC's per liter of (cheap)diesel. Where as on open road your consuming less diesel per 100, so paying more in RUC per litre. Where a petrol car is the opposite. So a high number of K's doesn't always = greater savings.
e.g you would get far greater savings driving a diesel 20,000ks around town stop start vs driving a diesel 20,000ks on the open road around the Canterbury plains.

Have you test driven one? I tested the first gen one.
It was like a wild animal, all the torque comes in one go, nothing gradual about it.
Like riding roller coasters, the shock to the body diminishes over time so it probably doesn't feel wild for long term owners.
I drive multiple makes and models everyday in my job and have lots of customers with all the models listed above and I can honestly say - nothing has ever "blown my brains out" or acted "like a wild animal" doing anything, including towing horse floats and large boats.
The closet was my mates supercharged 327 HQ Holden, was pretty scary alright - admittedly it wasn't towing anything or is a diesel, but still didn't blow my brains out.

I can't point you to a first gen Santa Fe to test so unfortunately the wild animal is probably extinct.
I have owned many turbo charged manual transmission Subarus so I'm quite used to wild animals.
I have to say since I've grown grey hairs I haven't been seeking wild animals to drive, probably put off by the daily road traffic accident news.
Dulouz:I'm in the market for a 7 seater mid-sized family SUV. So far I have boiled it down to the Toyota Highlander or Santa Fe/Sorento Diesel engine. My only concern with the Korean diesels is they will lack power on the open road compared to the v6 highlander. Any suggestions welcome.
Out-laws have an older diesel Santa Fe... Nice car for the money. It's no V8 BMW (:D) but it'll go close to our diesel X5.
question to those diesel santa fe owners - how do you know when it needs to "regenerate" and does it automatically happens once you hit 60ks in 5th gear at 1800 rpm?

If your talking about the DPF(Diesel Particulate Filter), mines a 2012 and doesn't have one, however it is a CM not a DM model, Im not sure if the DM's or later models have a DPF?

Have you driven a M50D?

No they won't!
My partners company car is a Santa Fe and it boogies, tows well and is used for P1 lights and sirens work.
I am surprised how well it goes and all on 7.5l/100km
I am speaking from the point of view of someone whose daily driver is a 450hp V8.

I'd love one!
You can also find good unbiased reviews for most NZ models at www.goauto.com.au then click on Car Reviews. Aussie cars are usually similarly spec'd to NZ models, so these reviews are more useful than reviews from Europe.
The good thing with this website is that you can find new car reviews for most makes and models released in Asia Pacific going back 20 years or more, so if you want to find out what the Aussie journo's thought about the 1996 Mitsubishi Magna or the 2007 Ranger XLT 4x4 double cab when it first launched, you can!
Obviously they also have reviews on current models as well.
