Dairyxox:

Been thinking of something big like an Audi Q7 V8 or VW Touareg V8.

Financial/Mechanical/Mental Suicide. AVOID a used Q7 or Towrag. Its only $2500 to do a disc and pad brake service on them....

Porsche Cayenne V8 Turbo will go faster than a Subaru WRX (in a straight line anyway).

OP said to ignore running costs, which I'm classing this kind of maintenance under.

What if the cost of one service is equal to the cars value?

Don't buy the Cayenne pepper with the number plate MRLNHQ. Its one of those with endless problems.

When I purchased an Audi I accepted the fact that the maintenance costs are high. As long as you go in with eyes wide open and can afford it I don't see what the problem is.

If I had $20k budgeted for a car, I would probably buy a $12-$14,000 car, and use the balance to repay some of my mortgage (or borrow less, or save the rest to invest).  Budgets are dangerous, they make you more likely to ignore a good deal that might be a few grand less - simply because you have $20k available.

$13k bought me a very decent 4 year old diesel ford focus station wagon a few years back.  In my opinion the difference (at the time) between a $14k car and a $20k car wasnt worth it. The cars were just a year or so newer with perhaps 30k less on the clock.  It wasn't worth it to me to pay the extra $7k.  3 years later - no complaints with that decision at all!

E36 M3, Wont find a car more fun. You could also snap up an E46 M3. Thats the best bang for buck you can get in a performance car over here and still look flash and not cost yourself a huge expense in maintenance as long as you get one with good history and NZ New.

E90 (Staywag, Coupe, 330I goes very well and is a great engine/drivetrain. Minimal issues with these cars.

370Z Nissan, see where your budget falls in that market place. Cool little quick cars! Use a heap more gas the the BMWs tho and they would be equally as fast and corner better and have less cabin noise and more comfortable.

Nissan Leaf if you can be bothered with the recharging and draw backs around that. maybe a good car if you cruise around the city all day.

Dont buy a turbo Audi/VW/Skoda. They are junk that has endless leaks and problems that require the engine to be removed to fixed.

What do you think about the 2006 + BMW 320i, 323i, 325i etc.? There's mixed views (on the internet) whether they leak and break down or not.

Everything leaks and breaks down at some point in its life, You cant elude the fact rubber goes brittle and metals expand and contract.
If you see a relatively new vehicle that leaks you can be sure that the owner didnt give 2 stuffs about it and never did preventative maintenance.

320I is a shocking engine, The N42 can go die.
Any BMW straight six is the go. go for the 325 if you can.
Excellent car, Get a NZ new please, No Jap-Crap...

The Suzuki Swift is due for an update in a few months and I'm sure it will include a sub $20k option. It actually looks pretty good.

Why no Jap import? NZ New would make it more expensive would it not?

$20k will buy you an average to reasonable lotus 7 replica which realistically is a sunny day only car and not practical for anything but A-A motoring... But it'll be more fun than anything else at that price.

For a usable fun car, The 370Z is a great choice, and very occasionally you see Fiat 500 Abarths near that price... My next car is going to be a 500 Abarth.

Cheers - N
