In areas with no coverage you probably don't need traffic as it's isolated and Google maps would have already loaded up your route by then anyway?

As mentioned earlier and since it does not seem to be registering to people,  google maps lets you download maps for offline use .

I'm not sure whether traffic works in offline areas though...

I think it is registering, however if you go somewhere unexpectedly then you may not have the area you need downloaded.

Correct traffic will not work in offline mode but as already mentioned you're unlikely to need traffic where there's no coverage.

On another note I like to reduce my exposure to Google as much as possible.

If unexected, then why not download the whole of new zealand?

Regardless, I use google maps, works great.

not even that how often are you driving round Auckland, which you have the maps for and then unexpectedly need to go to tauranga or hamilton?

Subsequent to Waze being purchased by Google, is Waze is basically GoogleMaps searching, data and routing but with the Waze info on top or are they different under the hood?

I used to like Waze but boy does it chew through your battery. I used it recently for ~1hr journey while plugged in to a 2.1A car charger. Started on 65% battery and finished the journey on ~25%. I've stopped using it, they really do need to do something to improve battery usage.

I see they've made offline maps easy now. I just opened GM and grabbed a route from Auckland to Wellington and it automatically put up a button to download maps for the route - that couldn't be easier.

One other thing to remember about Google Maps is that you have to re-download the maps every 30 days. That could be a good thing if they are updating them or a pain if nothing changes. Could also be very inconvenient if you forget.

no you dont, there is a setting in there to auto update them, and also whether you want to use wifi or wifi/mobile data to do it.

hands off no input from you if you choose to do it that way.

ive never had an issue, in a 50minute drive with google maps and waze open i would be lucky to use 10% battery.

sounds like something else is going on

There was also talk about Mazda eventually offering car play, however there seems to be some technical issues around it as Apple doesn't allow it to work over Bluetooth (this information is from Google not directly from Mazda)

There must be more to it than just that, as both our Mazda 2 and Mazda 3 support USB connectivity with our iPhones.

OP, enjoy your new car. We love our Mazda 2, but regret not getting it in Soul Red, and regret getting the entry level model. We got the reversing camera as an add-on, but should've gone for the next model up instead. Our reversing camera uses the same setup as the BT-50, and has a screen built into the rearview mirror. Takes a bit of getting used to.

Thank you. Looking forward to it. I got the GSX to make sure I got all of the toys that mattered.

I think I'll see what challenges I face with making the Mazda system work before spending any money. I've got Here as a backup. Thank you everyone for your contributions.

I'm in the process of buying a new Mazda2 (in gorgeous Soul Red because red cars go faster).

I can't comment on your particular question but as a recent Mazda 2 purchaser myself, I think you're buying an incredibly nice car for relatively little money. Enjoy :)
