Around Auckland I tend to find Z the highest priced for fuel

Season (heading into N.Hemi Winter) and  currency rates PLUS events such as lets say a warhead being casually flown across Japan and a Hurricane somewhere else... naturally theres a spike in the spot price of crude.  (remembering oil market pricing is 'hedged' just the same as NZ handles dairy pricing but nobodys complaining about the price per litre of milk as much being just as expensive than a litre of petrol. 

I'm not defending the oil companies, but gross margins of 10% ish for their retailers is a drop in the bucket.

If you really want to make a point, only visit independent dealers i.e. those gas stations not owned by the oil companies.   

When prices drop overseas, we don't see a comparative decrease here because we're fed the "oil is bought in advance, it takes months for prices to reflect trends.".

When prices increase overseas, it increases immediately, with no explanation.

It was  $191.9cpl not a week ago, I fail to see how Hurricane Harvey has caused it to increase 5% in a week? 

Still below $2 in Kapiti, $1.91.9 being the cheapest.

10c off at Z today

10c off at BP yesterday

I got into a bit of a dispute with Z the other week over their policy. Since their move to a permanent 6c discount earlier in the year pricing data I've seen shows plenty of occasions when their 9c and 10c discounts followed within 2-3 days of an increase and not a single time this has occured within 2-3 days of a decrease. They deny this is the case and claim that the bonus deals can happen at any time and have occured after a decrease.. But I'm still waiting for them to show me a single piece of evidence to back this claim.

Z are now as evil as Uber and Google.. They're not not even intersted in Airpoints after making a big deal about it last year, and don't even offer fuel discounts on this now because it was killing FlyBuys.

For anybody who lives in the Wellington region and heads to the Hutt regularly prices in Lower Hutt are currently 9c cheaper (192.9) at most sites than in Wellington. Just avoid Z and Z on Hutt Rd and BP on Railway Ave who charge the Z national price (ie 9c more).

I was just trying to pull the gas prices from the google api (they don't have it) and the waze api (doesn't have prices) to corroborate your story, but alas couldn't get the values.

I've seen the price go up 3 times this week (Dunedin - no "Gull" around here to get any cheaper prices, so always National price)

I'm seeing cheapest in Auckland is 169.9 on the Gaspy app. Dozens of stations in the 170's as well. 

A Gull and a Z opened on Neilsen St in Onehunga within a month or two of each other recently. Sadly it seems the Gull effect is not working in this case; despite being a 1 minute drive apart the Z is consistently priced between 25-30cpl more than Gull. Which is a shame because getting in an out of the Gull is a bit of a dog (perhaps why Z aren't too bothered).

Only problem is, they wholesale purchase and resell said large companies stock anyways.

Still can't get over how if there is all this 'competition' we keep being told about, why there isn't a week of NOT raising pricing at particular branches if they still have a tank to empty at previous hedged rates when it'll likely increase the chance of customers more than the busted discounting schemes. Rather than the 3hr differences we see when there is a change.

Unless it all relates to the post I made in the last thread like this (get rid of flybuys and coupons, we're all being stiffed one) pointing out they can even all use the others tanks to fill there own when short

The four largest domestic oil companies own bulk storage facilities throughout New Zealand and have agreements in place which allow access to each other’s storage facilities. This enables the companies to draw stock from any location, if they have authorisation and sufficient stock in another location. • Independent distributors (which both deliver petroleum products on behalf of the wholesalers, and also purchase their own fuel at wholesale prices to deliver to their own customers)

This week we say BP, Z and Caltex all offer 10c discounts immediately after they hiked fuel by 3c litre.

Based on some industry data I saw a month ago I asked Z on social media why they keep doing this. The response was that Fly Buys pumps promotions are not linked in any way and can occur when petrol is going up or going down. The data I saw showed numerous occasion where Z ran extra promos within 48 hours of an increase and not a single one where an extra deal was offered after a price drop. They said this happened but I'm still waiting for an example from them.

As far as I'm concerned Z are the evil force in the NZ fuel industry right now. They also set the national price.

Increase in crude oil prices and exchange rate changes. The NZ $ is worth less US dollars currently. That probably does not justify the entire increase as they probably gained some margin by stealth
