A good deal is the perception of the buyer. A good deal to me might not be one to you. It takes time to find a car, Don't be too icky but dont be too laid back. The only thing you get out of an AA test is less money in your pocket. Take it to a qualified workshop. (I am not going to bash AA guys today but sheesh)

Sit on trademe and autotrader, set your budget, see whats available. History is worth more than low KMS.
A good workshop will tell you if you have a good price or not.

I would look at ex-demo cars - often get a good slice off the new price, balance of the dealer warranty and they tend to be fairly well specced. Plenty on Tradme from the main dealers.

There is a user here @Nate that runs a site like this, the fee is about $500 and they do a full breakdown and comparison of models, running costs and they negotiate deals.

I did not use his service as the Mrs. got cold feet and I have contacts at Mazda that would have also helped. I ended up with a 2 year old Mazda6 with warrantly, free servicing and 53,000km for less than half a brand new car.

As others have said, I think you really need to list out your detailed requirements - "non-negotiable" and "nice to have" before you can do the groundwork and look for that Great Deal.

How many seats? 2wd or AWD? Petrol or diesel? Does it need to be quick? Does it need to tow stuff? Is fuel economy a priority? Does it need a huge boot? Do you care about the colour? What about the detailed specs and gadgets - any "must haves"? What is your maximum price? Are you paying cash, financing or a mix?

etc etc etc.

I can't speak about other brands but I recently got over 15% discount on a new Mazda 2 just by ringing up one dealer, asking for their best price by phone, and got another to match it. Were I not so time poor, I am sure I could have played the game for longer and gotten more.

Very much depends on where in the model cycle you are.

The new CX-5 earlier this year there was no discount to be had!

At the moment I am talking to the showroom dealers and they don't seem to reduce even a 500$ from what they have advertised.

The answer: right place, right time.

If they are selling cars like hot cakes, why would they discount?

If they need to sell cars because nobody is buying, they will discount!

The other reason they are not interested could be that they think you are not serious. They are not going to give you a lower price and have you say I'll go and think about it and never come back.

I'd say, dress well, and ask to test drive a car. And don't look interested, play the I was at Mazda the other day and their car was much better and much cheaper. See what happens.

If you are not in any rush, wait for the runout specials to start. Every year when the next years model is close to being released, the dealers will start discounting the current models to clear them out. As hardly anyone would want to buy a brand new 2017 model, when the 2018 model is also available.

Especially when the next years model is a facelift or even an all new design. As often the all new versions have better safety, fuel efficiency etc. So the dealers know that they need to sell all of the previous ones, otherwise no one would want them (without a massive discount). When the new version is out.

Also to make sure that you don't buy, and then have the new version come out straight afterwards. Meaning you then take a big deprecation hit.

The refresh on the 2 happened just a couple of months before I bought my car, so it was seen as a hot, new thing. One dealer gave me a $500 discount and I laughed in their face. The one I bought from was initially resistant to giving a discount but the moment I showed my hand from the 3rd dealer, they price-matched and then on their own agreed to exceed it (only by a bit). One thing I noticed across the three brands that I looked at was that, contrary to popular opinion, none of them would do any deals on finance beyond the brand's low interest offerings. But as soon as they heard that I was a cash buyer, everyone was at least willing to talk.
