Not all replacement actuators are being made by Takata. Some of the car makers have chosen other manufacturers.

Batman:

hmm if they are broke how are they then making airbags for the recall?

http://money.cnn.com/2017/06/25/news/companies/takata-bankruptcy/index.html
A sort of son of Takata (now owned be new owners) is making some of the replacements.
The 'original' company was sold off because of takata's bankruptcy.

Hatch:

http://www.rightcar.govt.nz/airbagrecall

Just checked and found that our car (a Nissan) is caught by the recall.

Never received a letter from Nissan or our dealer.

Talked to a Nissan dealer who really didn't know how to deal with recalls for a Jap import.

They have sent an email to Nissan NZ to confirm next steps.

Was just wondering how exhaustive that list is - I thought it involved more models and year than that?

Here's the key info on the Nissan website regarding the recall:

  • The cost of the parts and labour is met by the Distributor. The only cost to you is your time to take your vehicle to a franchised dealer to have the work undertaken.

The recall list cited by Nissan (above), doesn't list our vehicle, although the site in my original post does. Weird, have emailed Nissan direct and will see what their response is.

Response received from Nissan:

Further to your enquiry, we can confirm your vehicle XXXXX is included in the Takata passengers airbag recall for Japanese domestic used imported vehicles.

The airbag recall for your vehicle was released in 2015 in Japan and we understand your vehicle was imported into NZ prior to that date.

We do not have a schedule for the release date for the applicable recall for your Nissan at this time. However if your vehicle has not been previously repaired we will contact you when the recall commences.

For your information, the fact that your vehicle is involved in this Recall is not evidence that it is unsafe or defective. This Recall is a precautionary measure; very few, if any vehicles involved will have a fault with the passengers airbag inflator.

We hope this information will assist you.

Kind regards

Update:

Was advised by MBIE that NZTA are monitoring the recall.

Sent a quick note to NZTA and here is their response:

Hi there, it appears there are two recall lists below, for me the second site (the NZTA site) does not list my vehicle, while the first one does.

http://www.rightcar.govt.nz/airbagrecall

https://www.vehiclerecallsafety.nzta.govt.nz/

  Good afternoon

Thank you for your enquiry regarding the Takata Airbag Recall.

The NZ Transport Agency's role as part of the recall is to assist the manufacturers in contacting those who are affected.

As you vehicle has been identified as affected by the manufacturer you will need to wait until you receive more information from them on when they will be able to assess and carry out the repairs to your vehicle. From their email below, it doesn't look like they have an estimated timeline of when  this will be. In the meantime you will need to address any concerns which you have the manufacturer directly.

Please feel free to reply to this email or phone our Contact Centre on 0800 108 809 with any further queries. We are open Monday to Friday, between 8am and 6pm.

Regards,
Sam

Just to share my experience, booked my car in 2 days out, this was at my convenience, not theirs, dropped off at 7:30am, and collected at 9am. They'd also given it a wash n vac. All at no cost. Not a bad effort Toyota.
