Don't rely on carjam's records all the time, the car I just sold, Carjam have said hasn't had a warrant since 2015, which isn't true. This is just via the free check tho, a paid one should be accurate.

200k on a car made in the "2000's" is nothing really. The 2004 Nissan I just sold has 210+ on the clock, and has NEVER given an engine issue. Think only things we ever did was the shocks, battery, and usual maintenance.

OP, you mention a knocking sound - you are running the car on 95/98 ? (Have to ask)

Not that type of knocking (detonation) I am sure they mean a sound like a bearing trying to jump out of the engine and run away

I have a NZ new 2000 Corolla that uses next to nothing between 10k services (about 104k on the clock)

Friends don't let friends buy cars from 2Cheapcars, Take the car back demand a refund if not take them to court

generally toyota is fine with that mileage. oil leaks for sure with 180k on the clock.

My old Ford Telstar NZ new with well over 200k on the clock (owned since about 60k) had zero oil leaks and only had the cam belt done in the time I owned it

Yea I have a 1985 Toyota Dyna diesel truck with 400,000kms parked on my newish exposed aggregate driveway and even that leaks absolutely zero oil.

on the note of carjam, yes it has been changed.

Infact, it totally has been changed to the car's Engine which replaced it (mileage etc included).

Knowing that the whole lot was not replaced (looked like just the head replaced), this seems slightly dodgy to me?..

I'm really curious as to how 5 litres of oil per month or so can be used with out any noticeable signs.
I would expect there would be large amounts of smoke if it was being burnt, puddles of oil under car if it was leaking, or very milky coolant if it was being pushed into cooling system.

5 Litres must be pretty close the total capacity of the engines sump.

It's running a "total loss oil system". Just swap the filter from time to time and you never have to do an actual oil change ever.

But yes, 5 litres per month indicates a serious issue that, as noted above, should be fairly obvious.

I suggest writing a 'letter that gets results' from the consumer NZ website. Put it down in writing, and a time line of facts and ask them for a solution.

That's why this has been an ongoing thing that i've been managing..

Busy work with afternoon hours has lead to putting this off, thus feeding it's drain in the mean time.

In terms of noticeable leaks, No signs at all. Which is why i suspected it was something else all together.

Is possible the under engine cover hides this, however i pulled that off a month ago (when i dropped the oil cap down there.....)

So i'd have noticed if a puddle of oil covered me that day...

As has already been said, 5l (it was definitely 5 Liters, not .5 liter?) is out of control bad, and normally you'd notice either a massive puddle under the car, or really bad blue-ish smoke when driving the car.

The car has certainly had a major issue before you got your hands on it, and the checks you've done are well above and beyond what most people would do, and should be totally unnecessary on a car of that age and KMs.

I think those Atenza's do have a big plastic skid panel under the engine, so that would catch some oil without it dripping on the ground if there was an actual leak, but it does sound more like the engine is actually using the oil, which is of course much worse.

Just confirming what others have already said, you want to get your money back for the car, and never go near 2cheap again, and you're well within all rights for this to happen. Hopefully they will sort you out without you having to go right through a CGA claim. Good luck.

What you have described is not an acceptable situation. The motor trade association (MTA) has a mediation service. You could try them in the first instance if you wish. However in your case I think I would go to the MVDT considering you haven't had sufficient outcomes from the dealer. https://www.justice.govt.nz/tribunals/motor-vehicle-dealer-disputes/

It will cost you $50 but I think it will be worth it.
