Got my partner a Transcend DrivePro200 (due to the wide agent lense of 160) from Amazon, I'm happy with it for a cheap dashcam, cost around $180

I personally have the Blackvue DR650S-2CH and it does the job fine.

@Item Here is another video to give you an indication:

Note, this driver was an older guy. It is what he was taught to do in the 70's I believe but more just found it interesting since it is incorrect these days. In regards to night time driving I have got a video at sunset here of a guy in a bit of a rush to dinner. I however was having a bit of fun attempting to keep up with him for as long as I could as I understood he lived close to me and have seen him speeding around my area before. Not pointing fingers here as I was technically in the wrong for attempting to follow him but sometimes it can be fun to do so (when it is safe that is) when you've got a dashcam.

@michaelmurfy I am bit disappointed with the video quality on that Garmin. I also like how the Navman stamps speed, geolocation on the video (I guess you probably have an option for this too on the Garmin?)

Some of his videos above do have speed/location? He blurred it out on the last video he posted though but not the others. I like how the Garmin gives the location in decimal coordinates which makes it easier to look up the location later.

I have a DOD 430W after a recommendation from this site a wee while back. It seems to work well, but I struggle with the menu system. My brother changed the settings when I borrowed my truck last year, and I have totally failed to get it back to how I like it (with the GPS speed read out). I like the software you download for it, but I don't like that it records something like two minute segments, and there is a tiny jump between files. I don't remember it always doing that, so it might be down to my brother's meddling.

The last two times I needed it, I mad the mistake of unplugging it too soon after the event — to make it easy to find the file — which actually corrupted the file because it had not saved to the card when I unplugged it. Grrrrrr

Something that has made life easier is mounting a pair of these one each side of the interior light in my Pajero. They are $11 from Jaycar The flange is removable.

I ended up taking down the front of the roof lining so I could get an ignition feed up there, but it was no hassle, and it gave a head start when I fitted a CB antenna on the roof.

I ended up buying a Viofo a119.

Very simple, capacitor not battery based and good video quality. I saw them on Techmoans YouTube channel as he has reviewed a few of them. Has GPS and other features that you’d expect from a dash cam.

Was so impressed with the first one, ended up buying another one for the other day and a few friends were impressed with the video quality too.

I found Techmoan had highly recommended them on his YouTube channel - review below.

Sorry for a naive question, but what do people need dashcams for? Is it so that when you get into an accident you have a proof of what happened?

For backing up your version of what happened in an accident.

For proving that a cop is lying when he said you were doing such and such a speed, or did not stop at a junction with a Stop sign.

For showing the cops after you follow a tourist crossing the centre white line, and/or getting the footage on the six o'clock news. This is from today for instance, but looks like a cell phone. Dashcam footage would be much better.

For uploading strange incidents to your YouTube channel. I put the video below up a year or so back, after hitting some tree cuttings that were in deep shadow, and had not warning.

This last one is interesting. If you compare the original footage with the dark shadows with the much brightened footage after editing in Premiere Pro CC, you'll see it held together reasonably well despite some drastic changes. I have been given 4K footage from a DJI that collapsed into garbage after I tried some nothing like so drastic changes in Premiere Pro with it. This is a good indication of video quality. For instance 1080P from my Canon G1X compact is nowhere near as resilient as the footage from my Canon XF300 video camera, or from my Canon 1DC even when shooting 4K. So the bottom line is that the DOD dashcam produces remarkably resilient footage for what it is — providing you don't unpower it too soon.

I was always a little nervous about batteries and leaving the unit in the sun so having the capacitor option means one doesn’t need to worry about batteries overheating.

Mostly to help protect you from insurance fraud. It usually takes one time for the other party to blame you for their doing to save you from the insurance premium which pays for the dashcam.

I had one, but it melted a bit on a hot day. It still works, but the battery lasts 2 minutes. Never buying one with a battery again, in case of explosion.
