mudguard: I'm all for ebikes for commuting (on mountainbike trails, well that's another discussion)

What's stopping you from continuing to pedal? Weather, the time, lack of showers etc? Or just sick of it?

You must be pretty fit if you've been doing that for awhile.

It's the shower thing... at work it's on the basement floor, there aren't enough of them, shared with the other office tenant. I just don't have time to be needing to get to the office and need a shower and a change of clothes. So need to be able to pedal only minimally to avoid getting sweaty.

Enjoy your new bike We need to be encouraging Universities and high schools to move away from cars and move into Ev Bikes.

I have a Meloyelo Bafang 20" foldable goes into the Back of My Leaf behind the back seats Very versatile on all sorts of tracks But clunky in the front Forks. Have done 1500 kms since just before Xmas no problems can get a good range from a charge usually around 80Kms using power assistance 1/2.

Has made riding much more pleasurable especially for me (well past retirement age)

I rode one of these home the other night, borrowed it from Electify CBD on trial... got me from the Auckland Viaduct to Titirangi in 31 minutes. Seating position is upright so it feels weird if you're used to lower centre of gravity plus you can't really climb out of the saddle.. I've got a Smartmotion Pacer (White/Black) on order and should be with me by tomorrow at the latest.

That Electrify popup is outside our office - I might leave my car in the office garage and overnight one of their bikes. Do they charge (no pun intended!) for the loan?

I went to the shop just off franklin road... If you mean hte black unit with solar panels on the viaduct, that is a different brand and they will loan you, at a price, a bike for up to 24 hours. The Electrify shop lent it for free, was very good of them. They supply the magnum brand... The Mi5 mountain bike would have been good as well but by the time I would have added the guards etc. on to it and a few extra items I would have got closer to the smartmotion price but I prefered that bike... remember if you're with mercury energy then you get a discount from certain e-bikes.

Quick side question, If you have a full motorcycle license, does that mean the power restriction don't apply. Are there E bikes in the 20+ kilowatt range ? Or would they covered as full on class 6 vehicles, Need reg + wof.

No, they are legally controlled at 300w otherwise... anything greater and they can be a pedal bike... In reality, the legislation doesn't specify how you measure the watts of the motor... Most ebikes will have a sustained output of 300/350w but a peak of over 500w!

I've been cycling since may last year, but only for 5-6 km each way in central AKL. no hills, apart from grafton cycle way on the way back, then tamaki dr for the last 3 months - perfect!

However, since moving to Te Atatu, 15+ km each way is a bit too much. 50-70 mins each way. So I just want to cut the time for commuting. Bus would take 70-90mins in the morning and 60-70 mins in the evening. Tried car anything from 30-60 mins and pay for car park. So ebike! :)

I've done it in 42 mins today, but got delayed on couple traffic lights. so interesting to see if I could get it in 30-35 mins, will be perfect for me.

I did average pretty much 40kph to hit the 31 minutes... 45ish on the flats, 35 up hill and then 50 downhill... there abouts anyway.

Got home. 17.6 km according to head unit on ebike, after 4 pints of beer ( no shaming plz) 35 min. Perfect!

The engine starts to work based on the torque of the peddles, so when you start to peddle harder the motor picks up the load. Just cruising along, then its off. Gives a far greater range and more natural feel to cycling.
