You mean the tunnel that National wanted to build above-ground (so not actually a tunnel)?

It's 2018 and they built a tunnel.

Plenty of money though, for AT to house their bureaucrats in an absolutely gold plated office fit-out next door to us in the swanky Viaduct Harbour business park, and to pay thousands of their staff 100K+ salaries.

They moved to that leased building with poor parking and poor public transport located in the same destination as 80,000 other morning commuters from a building that the council owns, located in an area that needs more industry, that has great parking and that was right beside a railway station.

Clearly AT don't believe in the product they sell and want to exacerbate the problem which creates the need for motorways in the first place - being Auckland's imbalance between where people work and where they live .

Amalgamation promised efficiencies of scale was a lie. It's about bigger inefficiencies and blunter spending.

Had a nice precursor last night as my drive home from work at 4:30pm took 59 minutes. Did the same trip in reverse on Sunday morning at 5:30am in... 23 minutes.

At least National's 9 year reign of transport terror is finally over. Auckland Transport is being dragged kicking and screaming into reality but they seem to be slowly realising the failed era of "build more roads, that'll definitely fix congestion" is over.

LOL - can't see the wood for the trees. The problem in your first paragraph is caused by the enabler in your last! Now that the unions are running the country via Labour, you can look forward to more strikes as they rise in power and flex their muscles to drive recruitment and give the illusion of progress.

RMTU are still working with a 1950's mindset in the 21st century.

In this case the train operator is taking "train managers" off trains and replacing them with a larger number of "transport officers" who can move around and be on trains or stations.

Personally I've never seen any need for "train managers". They simply manage the doors and check tickets and there's no reason the driver can't do that. If the "transport officers" improve security then I'm all for them.

From what I recall on the trains in Melbourne the driver did the doors. They had CCTV and if someone was obstructing the doors they'd get on the PA and inform the whole train to shame the person into behaving.

I'm all about good manors & behaviour on public transport as well. The manors and civility on the trains in Singapore are refreshing to experience.

Yep, they publicly flog miscreants so don't seem to have the issues we have where kids can vandalise and assault in the sure knowledge that they face being "referred to youth services" as a punishment.

I have to say NZ is the only OECD country where I can remember seeing train managers on urban trains.
