National and labour have nothing to do with the new network. it was AT/Auckland council.

The "new network" was only possible by central government legislation changes that both Labour enacted and then National made modifications to - before that any bus company could register a commercial route (ie that didn't require a subsidy) and the regional council had very limited powers to decline the registration.  Then the regional council had to put tenders out for subsidised services (eg evening/weekends that wouldn't be viable commercially).  This led to perverse outcomes such as some companies registering a single commercial route one day a week, or withdrawing commercial routes effectively forcing then to be put out to tender.

The recent law changes allow the routes to be contracted as a unit (ie the bus company has to take the routes for an area as a package and can't cherry-pick).  So while AT/Auckland Council have done a lot to improve public transport in Auckland, they were effectively powerless until the law changed.  See the Land Transport Management Amendment Act 2013

For people on the North Shore, I'd wait and see how the new network works out for you - I have had personal experience with it in South and West Auckland and the services are a lot more frequent.  Multi storey carparks are not cheap - need lifts, large circulation areas for vehicles, fire sprinklers, monitoring and so on - makes the cost per park quite expensive to the point where I suspect most people wouldn't pay.

The story I heard is that when the Constellation Park and Ride was designed, it was originally to have a larger carpark but local businesses objected, saying that it would bring too much traffic to the surrounding streets.

And now all the bus riders park in the surrounding streets because there's no enough room in the station carpark and the people that work in the local businesses have nowhere to park... (I work across the road from the bus station and often have to park up on Sunset road and walk down to work).

I catch the bus and if I don't get to Sunset Rd by 6.50am, I don;t get a park within a decent walking distance...was especially inconvenient when I was carrying an ankle injury and walking was a struggle.

If the feeder buses worked and were more frequent and convenient, I'd have no complaints...

I only live 11 minutes drive away, in Bayview, but I would have to take 2 buses to get to the Constellation station (unless I was prepared to walk 1.6km to Glenfield Road, which Google Maps estimates would take me 21 minutes, but that's pretty optimistic since the first 300 metres are up a very steep hill).

Yep. It's happened at every station, Sunnynook, Albany, etc. Sunnynook is a little different because it doesn't have a park and ride, but the surrounding streets are full of cars. Albany has had its carpark expanded 3 times. The point I'm making is that if they just build a reasonable carpark to begin with, then all the cars get contained there.

They call it a Park and Ride because you drive your car to the carpark and then park there, then you ride the bus. Now they want everyone to ride the bus to the bus station and ride another bus from there. So really it's a Ride and Ride.

Don't get me started on the feeder buses undecided

In cities with decent public transport links it's not an issue to catch more than one bus/train/tram/ferry. It's the 15 mins plus wait times between connections that piss people off. I don't mind changes but sometimes getting from the Shore to anywhere that's not the CBD or Newmarket involves changes that take forever unless you go at a specific time of the day which is not always convenient...

Having said that, I would hate to be in the route planning team!

To be fair - our population density doesn't really support a great public transport system.

To have 1.5m people in a city the size of Auckland leaves a lot of land to cover (we are sparsely populated by world standards) and it would be a real cost to the tax/rate payer if we had a truly globally-efficient public transport system.

To have buses or trains or trams every couple of minutes all day every day like you have in cities like London, Amsterdam, New York etc, simply would not make economical sense.

Hence the need for good, solid parking infrastructure and a network of Park and Ride stations that can cope with the volumes of commuters that will use them.

Perhaps the 80/20 rule should apply here. If we could at least make enough effort to get frequent buses to 80% of our city with decent wait times (no more than 15 mins) then we might make a difference. From there we can build up from that 80% base.

By the way, did you know that the idea of Auckland being low density is a bit of a myth these days? Our population density is now higher than Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide, all of which have better public transport than Auckland and especially Auckland's North Shore.

UPDATE:

I received an email from AT over the weekend (it only took them 3 weeks to respond), outlining their reluctance to address the issue...see below:

Thank you for contacting Auckland Transport regarding the parking issue along Constellation Drive, Rosedale.

We understand the frustration of the high demand for limited parking at Constellation busway station.  Auckland Transport’s approach to investing in Park and Ride capacity can be found here on page 36  https://at.govt.nz/media/1119147/Auckland-Transport-Parking-Strategy-May-2015.pdf.  Constellation is too central to be a favourable location for further investment in increasing capacity within a limited regional budget.  Park and Rides work best at more peripheral locations that are upstream of congestion, have less alternative modes to access stations and where cheaper land is often available.  Multi-storey car parks are especially expensive to develop.

The implementation of the New Network on the North Shore will change how bus feeder services operate and hopefully provide opportunities for easier access to the busway.  News on the progress of the project can be found here

https://at.govt.nz/projects-roadworks/new-public-transport-network/new-network-for-north-shore/

We encourage customers to see alternative means to access busway stations through cycling, walking or carpooling with others, if possible.

So...basically, it's going to get worse, we don't care and maybe you should ride a bike. Or at least that's how I read it...

like has been said many times wait until the new network arrives and see if it makes a difference for you.
