Cracking of alloy rims is fairly common. Usually fine fatigue cracking leading to pinhole leaks. Never heard of it being caused by machine damage.

Geektastic: I had a strange one today. I had a soft tyre, so assumed a puncture and headed to see my tyre guy.

Turned out to be leaking from a hole in the alloy wheel itself. Bizarre.

Apparently it usually results from bead breakers hitting the inner surface when removing tyres.

I may have this. My rear-right tyre has been leaking one pound / day since Nissan Manukau last installed two new tyres on my LEAF.

Very reliable. Excatly 1 pound per day. So I have to top it up every 2-3 days if highway travelling or once / week around town.

I'm taking it in soon for them to have a look, but two weeks work in OZ just got in the way.....

So the tyre fitters have apparently fessed up to causing the damage, sending the wheel away for repair and not even telling the big boss, so he never passed that on to the dealer.....some honest, quality professional standards there. I wonder what would have happened if I had had a blow out as a result and careened into a bus stop full of commuters...

The upshot is that they will get me a new matching wheel and tyre, which is going to cost them - I spoke to a panel shop I know to ask about a different thing, and they mentioned that they recently enquired about a replacement wheel for a RR Sport and were quoted about $2,000 each..! That seems very high but the tyre guys I took it too with the problem in the first place said "at least" $800 per wheel so clearly not cheap, especially with the $600 tyre it will cost them as well...!

That is more than unprofessional it borders on unlawful negligence.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Rim failure is always risk with a defect and thata could be ugly.  On the reassuringly side alloy is reasonably doughy compared to steel, which can just break apart.  Friends eriously bent an alloy rim on their golf (pot hole) and it still held together.

A friend in the UK recently broke a Mercedes alloy and burst a tyre in a pothole. He filed a claim against the Council responsible for the road maintenance and they covered the replacement in full. His Merc has rubber bands for tyres though!

Probably why they are being so speedily accommodating with regard to the replacement!

Update today from the dealer.

A new wheel ordered from Land Rover UK at a cost of $1400 + GST + Freight from UK...!

When it arrives (2-3 weeks) it will be fitted with new matching tyre and sent to me.

Will the tyre be shaved to match the wear on your existing tyres or are you buying 3 new tyres to match?

Bugger - can't they source a 2nd hand one locally? Usually there's one lying around from a car that's been wrecked, upgraded its wheels or something?

The other 4 are all brand new, less than 1000km.

Why? I think it is excellent service from the dealer to insist on ordering a new, genuine part.

I have experienced leaky wheels in the past but oddly only at the bottom of the tyre the rest seems normal. hmmmmm?
