Toyota Aqua definitely worth a look. Brilliant little car. Great around town. Highway 100KM happy as. Traffic hold ups are no worries as ICE motor stops when you do. Real world average 4 L / 100 KM.

I bought the Aqua as a work car (around 40 km each way to work). It has proved extremely popular and I seem to have my work cut out getting my hands on it. We generally decide at the start of the day who is going to do the most km's and they take the Aqua. The 17 year old won't drive the Corolla that he was supposed to "inherit" and will now only drive the Aqua.

Interesting. I have a 17YO nephew, my son (a few years older) went to visit with them a couple of weeks ago, coming back with the story that his cousin was boasting that he'd reached automotive heaven as he had the "loudest" car in the school carpark. I think it's off the road now - something blew up. Possibly a good thing for all.

Wife got a brand new swift at the start of the year, the manual GL povo spec entry level model and it’s a brilliant wee car. Runs on the smell of an oily rag and comfortably takes us and our 6 year olds from palmy to we’ll, or palmy to Hawkes bay and back when we wanted to. Runs easily around town and is surprisingly roomy inside for its size.
I was considering a cheaper 2nd hand leaf but for the times we wanted to take it out of town i didn’t want my wife stopping to top up the battery to make a 90 minute trip longer (and her anxiety around the range if she got stuck, which TBF she also gets with a petrol car and always ensures the tank is full when she goes out of town). The swift won out financially and mentally.

Sadly out of my price range I have learned the hard way to not purchase new especially in Auckland as others don't respect your property and the roads are just not suitable.

Currently looking into a second hand Nissan Leaf, Mazda 2 or Toyota Aqua, I can try and stretch for a hybrid but at my price range it doesn't seem like I'll get a worthwhile purchase :(
