If the car is diesel, leave it full. Otherwise you get condensation in the fuel tank and water in the fuel. Read that somewhere but don't know how true it is.

I wouldn't stress too much about the handbrake. Just don't leave it cranked right up..
If you wanted to you could leave the car connected to a battery conditioner.
Keep the car in the garage open so it doesn't get stale.
The car in the driveway set the heater system to closed circuit so less moisture creeps in.

Never really cared about this myself, just left the car on the side of the road for 3 weeks last year and didn't do a thing, jumped in and she fired straight up. But not everyone has such a fine piece of German engineering as I do..

Handbrake - Read somewhere that brake pads may get stuck to the disc & get damaged.

What do you mean by "set the heater system to closed circuit" ?

It might get stuck, rightttt.. I wouldn't really think it would. Maybe if you sat it in salt water for an hour then left it for a month. Sure....

As I write I am away for 3 weeks

My petrol Honda car is left in the garage , I have not bothered with disconnecting the batteries, and hand brakes are on.

For a smaller time period it has always started fine. If you do disconnect the batteries, make sure that you have the code for the radio unit as it will reset.

I do leave contacts for my family and rental agency with the neighbour who can call in case of an emergency

My post is on hold ( cheaper to do it online with NZ post) and a NO JUNK MAIL sticker purchased from the 2$ shop on the letter box.

Hot water is OFF and lawns are mowed while I am away using VIP

If the heatpump is on a weekly timer , switch the timer off.

Havent bothered with the fridge for a 3 week holiday or shutting off the water mains

Leave a light on a timer in the living room that comes on in the evening and off about 11pm

Switch on the alarm and leave the code and keys with someone whom you trust

Inform the bank if you are travelling overseas so that they do not cancel your credit or debit cards. Westpac allows this to be done online.

If carrying prescription medication keep them in the bottles supplied from the pharmacy with your name on it in your hand luggage or a buffer

quantity that would tide you by in case of lost luggage.

Write down a check list and cross them off so that you have done your best.

When I am ready to depart on the day , I only worry about passports ( valid for atleast 6 months), tickets or e prints, credit cards and money.

OH I forgot, share your holiday pics here. But please NOT all of them.:)

Love the R31-34 models..... these newer ones are still nice cars but need the RB series engines to retain the Skyline name ;)

It's only 2 months not a year or something. My falcon goes that long without being driven all the time and is fine.

We were away for a month, left our son's car at my FIL's near the airport. Arrived back at 3:00am (4 hours late and not even Jetstar), battery was too flat to start the car. Very inconvenient. Battery seems to be okay, car has immobiliser, alarm, etc and there's a small drain on the battery at all times - easily measurable with a clamp meter. Can't remember how much, but perhaps < 50mA = ~ 2 AH day = guaranteed flat battery after a few weeks. Car is a 2008 Toyota.

Solution would be to get a small cheap solar charger. About 5w is safe to use direct connected (not using a charge controller - which are quite expensive) without over-charging/sulphating the battery. A big panel (>10 watts or so) will kill the battery if used without a charge controller. Problem is if you're leaving the panel on the dash / rear shelf, you'd need some connection to the battery (plugging it in to a cigarette lighter socket won't work unless the socket is "always on" - sometimes SUV rear accessory sockets are wired like this). If it's in a garage with power, then a cheap trickle charger should do the trick.

Apart from hot water, checking that nobody has left a hose turned on at the tap/off at the nozzle, fridge contents etc, I turn the gas off to our hob at the bottle outside, set some plug-in timers to turn some lights on/off, leave a car parked blocking the driveway, lock and remove keys from outside doors, lock a gate - all making it as inconvenient as possible for burglars to clean the place out without it being obvious to neighbours that something fishy was going on. If you've got a garage with a manually operated tilt door and valuables inside, consider putting sliding bolt latches and padlocks on both sides. If it's a tilt door with an auto opener and valuables stored inside, remove the rope for the manual release while you're away.

I was chatting to our neighbour today. She is recently returned from her annual 12 week trip to the UK and she left their ute in Wellington airport long term the whole 10 weeks with no special treatment - just locked it and walked away. Started first time.
