@ shim99

I won’t quote your whole post but thank you. I owned this car when I was living in Ireland and I thought about getting it done while there but the insurance companies wouldn’t go near it. I’m aware of the capabilities of the Euro guys but hadn’t considered them from here.

I’ll look into those you’ve mentioned.

Having spent some time in Ireland recently I can appreciate why you never got it done there. Insurance is a whole different world over there. There was a VAG NZ group who may be able to lend you the cables needed if you go down that DIY route.

Do not go with some chip tuning vendor here in NZ. They just use cheap Russian remaps that they all get from the same spot.
Go with a brand like UniTronic or APR. They have NZ resellers or vendors found via their site or you can ask me and I can look.

I personally would not tow with a DSG vehicle. At all.... Let alone with more power than it is designed to handle.

If these remaps really produce the claimed results then why don't the manufacturers do it at the factory? There must be some sort of significant compromise involved, most likely environmental in nature.

It will probably also void your warranty.

Partly due to price/brand positioning.

The same 2 litre TSI is used across a ton of the VAG cars and puts out significantly different power depending on whether you are buying a Skoda Octavia VRS, Golf GTI, Seat Cupra, Audi S3 etc.

I am not sure if these variants have additional differences in any of their components, but it is the same core engine and gear box etc and I know many Skoda owners do the stage 1 tune to boost the output without any problems at all.

There are obviously other considerations such as brakes, suspension etc but it seems a common practice amongst many manufactures (not just in the auto world) to effectively release the same hardware across multiple tiers of product but at differing price points depending on how much capability is unlocked (see Intel CPUs, Tesla Autopilot/batteries etc)

Warranty is a grey area - technically unless it could be proven that the fault you are reporting was as a direct result of the modification, the warranty claim should stand. In practice you might have an uphill battle depending on the dealer in question. It wouldn't necessarily be obvious to a dealer that the mod had been done unless they specifically went looking for it either. I am sure if you made a warranty claim for a faulty power lift gate or leaky AC it would never come up anyway!

Looked into various Stage 1 upgrades for my V8 Commodore - incl exhaust / intake / remap.

My assessment as to why the manufacturers don't "do it at the factory":

1. Reduced reliability/longevity is a key reason - esp for tunes that give large gains in power/torque due to increased stress on engine, drive train etc.

2. Compliance with and possible adverse impacts on emissions.

3. Branding / segmentation between models (and also brands for the likes of the VW Group) as others have mentioned.

And yes warranty voided if you get "caught".

I was thinking the exact same thing.

See the dual input shafts off of the clutch pack? one is hollow with the second inside of it.. They like the break..
