surfisup1000:
I think it is at least 15 years away. Half the job is getting the tech to work, the other half is making it resilient against bad actors.
Little doubt that some will try to jam/ trick / confuse/ hack driverless car technology.
Where there is money, there will be hackers.
Senecio: I attended a conference recently where a futurist (didn’t know that was a real job) believed that many children born after 2018 will never have a license, they’ll never own their own vehicle.
As interesting as that sounds it’s also very sad. The day I got my license and bought my own car for the princely sum of $400 with a knackered 3rd gear was the start of my independence.
Here's an even more extreme scenario:
Said children will also never need to leave the house for anything, there won't be a need for cars.
Lay on the lazyboy 24 hrs, strap on virtual reality for
- gym
- work
- tinder/date/make babies to order, select features you want eg if you were same sex couple or infertile or anyone perhaps?
- travel
- doctor - Heck if you went to the doctor with tummy pain they wouldn't know what to do because they don't know what sex you are anyway!
- shopping
- attend lectures/school
- attend weddings/concerts/e-sports
- basically anything bar major surgery and your own funeral ... oh wait ...
