No, because the toll will not decrease and they will make it each 5 years when further high profile accidents occur.

Lives will be saved through safer road design, lower limits on poorly designed roads, and car safety improvements. Enforcement maybe helps too.

I looked at that crash site ... and no way should it be a 100kph road , more so in poor conditions.

Retesting every 5 years will not change human nature, which is the real issue.

Every time I drive over the Kaimais in wet weather I get nervous as people drive way too fast. A course will not fix that.

No. Because this just makes insurance more expensive for everyone. As a database and system for the Police needs to be created to do roadside insurance checks. Which would cost big $$$. And it wont do anything to stop those who drive without valid WOF / Rego/ RUC / valid licence etc.

And the worst part. It will be giving faceless overseas companies the right to decide who can drive. Some people wont be able to afford that insurance, and in turn would be forced off the road. Which would mean more people on unemployment benefits.

Privatize the profits, Socialize the losses.

And ACC provides mandatory 3rd party cover for personal injury due to road accidents anyway.

Not sure I agree with all of the above, but as a compromise perhaps a limit on power output for newer drivers the same as for Motorbikes?

 

Also a push to try and get crap tyres and unsafe cars off the road

I could not disagree with this more.

 

Stop blaming the roads, stop blaming the conditions, stop making people go slower on ever road and start educating people to be better drivers.

 

Looking out of my office window right now and there are two people talking on their cell phones at a set of lights. I can do this all day long and see dozens of people.

 

Get drivers of all ages onto defensive driving courses and make improve the attitude of those behind the wheel.

45 people have been removed from the roads in the last month. It might be handy to get a second opinion on your driving safety every now and then. Like, before you remove yourself the hard way.

I totally would.  I've been driving for 20+ years and I still find myself making mistakes that are dumb.  Just like cutting a corner I shouldn't, or holding the steering wheel with one hand when I should have two on there etc.  I think I'm pretty good at not tailgating, but sometime I still have to do the seconds counting and realise I'm a bit close, especially when it's wet.

 

I firmly believe driver education is the key.  We all (myself included!) think we're great drivers, but we're not.

 

However - will driver training every 10 years, or retesting etc fix this?  I'm not sure it will.

I have an Australian licence. Could I just covert my Aussie licence over every 10 years?

Should those who use an overseas licence temporarily say Aussie licence temporarily sit a driving exam at designated locations using a simulator with a 2 week VR pre tutorial/course?

Sitting in back seat of my sons' AA driving lessons, I was made really aware of some of the poor habits I've developed and some gaps in my knowledge.

 

A periodic refresher and test can only be beneficial.

And this is where it starts to get a bit murky...

 

Listening to Magic talkback this morning, a caller said a relative was killed on the roads by a foreign national from Argentina, and they only had to pay the fee to get the NZ license. Now if you make all tourists do a test on entry, is that going to be good for NZ tourism, and will other countries make NZer's travelling do the same?

The crash that killed this family was totally avoidable and it has made me think about my own driving behavior and I’m guilty of going too fast, using my phone (usually to change music rather than talk as I have Bluetooth for that) and being too relaxed behind the wheel, driving with one hand, looking at scenery etc…

 

 

 

We tend to take driving for granted and not enough thought goes into it. Every time you’re behind the wheel you’re in charge of a deadly weapon. The amount of driver inattention I witness every day is shocking, from people on phones (texting is the worst), not stopping or even looking at intersections. As a nation we are terrible drivers. Myself included at times. I tend to drive differently when my kids are in the car though.

 

 

 

I believe fines and penalties need to be stricter. Would you use your phone if it could be confiscated for 30 days? Probably not.

There is actually a convention that NZ signed. That gives foreign nationals the right to drive in NZ on their home country license. And also drive their home country car on NZ roads for a year. And in return, NZers get to drive overseas. Including being able to rent or buy a car and drive it around continental Europe. Or many other options where different countries share a land border.

So yes, if we placed restrictions on tourists driving in NZ. We should definitely expect the same restrictions to be placed on NZers who want to drive overseas.

Yes. A little effort, time and cost every 10 years would be well worth it. Particularly when obtaining a driver’s license years ago was easier, and the roads rules change, roads change, traffic increases.
May stop us taking our knowledge and skills for granted.
A previous employer put us through defensive driving, advanced driver training and off-road driving skills courses. It was all valuable training, and I would like to do more.
I also support compulsory third-party insurance, and more enforcement. Unlicensed drivers, using cell phones, running red lights, tailgating, unfit drivers and vehicles etc.
I have worked investigated/surveyed state highway crash sites, worked crash reduction studies, road safety improvement projects. I've heard people criticise and blame the road conditions at random sites, where no faults exist.
I do notice poor maintenance on some of our roads at present.
