Yep, I get that.

But I'll have to encounter a LOT of road rage/idiots on the road/accidents, to fill up 16GB with material that I want to keep, don't I?

Or am I missing something?

That depends. Some people document roadtrips (I did a Kaikoura run post EQ). And the smaller the card. The less travel time you can record in a hit before it's over-written. That may be as little as 1-2hrs. Also varied recording rate (and how bright it is outside) so the write count on a smaller one will also be higher.

Comes down to how often you want to pull it from the camera and deal with the saved stuff. If you only do it when you crash. Go right ahead, use an 8Gb. But if you want the temporary storage space to show the world what morons are around us or refer to stuff from some weeks back cause you forgot to hit the 'save this clip'. Get a larger card.

Perfect, thanks.

Are cheap SD cards reliable or should I always aim for Kingston, Samsung or Sandisk?

I've had a Samsung from 1-1day die shortly after instigating it's use. But can't be sure if that was the reader, or if the camera is hard on it. Wen't un-formatable.

My Transcend Class 4 has been rock solid however (and rated on many dashcam sites as quite compatible) as has the Samsung replacement I swap it with. Touch wood.

I have a Blackvue camera in my car (2 cameras - front and rear) and it destroys SD cards due to writing so much to them. Regular SD cards just simply don't last.

Do yourself a favour - grab a "High Endurance" SD card for your dashcam. Amazon has them for cheap: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00V5Q1N1I/ref=cm_sw_r_tw_dp_U_x_n2j0CbVYS5AFR

Never grab cheap SD cards for dashcams and especially never grab those cheap Sandisk SD cards as they have a really rubbish controller in them and have been known to damage some dashcams.
