zyo:

A typical car can hold more than 60l of petrol.

It really can't. The vast majority of petrol cars have a 45 - 55L tank (looks at common vehicles like Corolla, Civic, Mazda3 etc - none of them are 60L tanks). A few are closer to 60L, very few are 60L+. The likes of large diesel utes are typically 65L - 80L though.

Not really interested in the discussion of who can be bothered doing it, just wanted to clarify this misinformation :P

Meh. Helpful to accumulate discounts when you're at a cheaper than usual station if the discount is the same - usually outside of Auckland.

Then after a while you use them to get a substantial discount on a normal fuel top-up.

With the exception of Corolla, none of these cars are even on the top 10 best sellers in NZ, so they might be relevant to you but majority of the cars sold in NZ have bigger fuel tanks than small sized sedans you listed here.

I have a 70ltr tank and play the game, accumulate $0.90~$1.20/ltr discount then get a heavily discounted 50ltr fill once a month

Its worth the effort imho, that said there is a BP very close to my work so timing it is very easy

Now that I've linked my ASB Visa card to my AA Smartfuel card I'm getting about double the discount that I used to previously get. I think the last time I used it I saved about 55 cents per litre, which is definitely worth it to me.

The optimal method appears to be to fill using the minimum amount to accumulate the discount, then return - as you say - at a later date to fill the entire tank. Quite frankly though, it's not worth it for me when I factor in the time taken. Time is a very scarce resource.

I'm the same. I have access to 4 cars and 3 of them have tanks that are 78L or larger. (78, 80, 90)

I also take advantage of when Repco's sales on oil and their 40c/L discount coincide.

My last top-up of 58L (into a 78L tank) of 98 fuel I was able to save $95

Announced Today (not going to benefit me as we have no GAS local station in Invercargill, only BP under the new AA Smartfuel Partners which BP are more expensive then anywhere else):

I’m excited to let you know that GAS Service Stations (GAS) has been confirmed as our new fuel partner and will join the AA Smartfuel programme from Thursday 1 August 2019.

GAS, combined with our existing fuel partner BP, will provide more than 300 fuel sites nationwide. The full list of participating GAS sites will be announced online at the end of this month.

GAS is proud to be a 100 per cent locally owned brand and has a strong presence in regional and rural New Zealand. AA Smartfuel already has strong coverage in major towns and cities with our partner BP and the addition of GAS enriches that coverage across all of New Zealand.

The great news is GAS will be offering a discount of at least 6 cents per litre every day when you spend $40 or more on fuel.*

Our records show that you’ve saved $61.34 using AA Smartfuel – a figure I hope will continue to grow with the addition of GAS.

GAS Managing Director Tim Ellis says their network is excited to welcome you in too: “I have never seen our network so enthused and committed to a single initiative during my time with the company.” Tim says.

AA Smartfuel is the only rewards programme that enables New Zealanders to accumulate the biggest fuel discounts simply by shopping with some of NZ’s leading brands, including BP, Countdown, Contact Energy and ASB Credit Cards.

P.S. AA Smartfuel’s partners from Thursday 1 August 2019 will be BP and GAS. You can continue to earn and redeem AA Smartfuel discounts at Caltex up to and including 31 July 2019.

My guess is they are burning up the budget for it.

G.A.S locator: https://www.gas.kiwi/gas-locations/

Only 1 station in Wellington itself, none in Porirua or Hutt Valley.

No surprises by the decision. BP are the supplier of fuel to GAS along with supplying their backend systems.

They are going to start letting you stack the discounts too

News to me that you could 2x fills via the BP app; maybe I need to look into that to save a few more cents every visit - though since NPD opened up I have been heading to Z near the NPD site that is competing on price. Over the last month since coming back from Europe, BP have been sending me increasing personalised discounts over the standard 10c extra discounts they do every week. Mostly 11/12c, this week it was 15c

I very rarely use the AA card for fuel.

My fuelcards get at least the same discounts most of the time and my Farmlands card gets 12c/l at Z, Caltex and Challenge at all times.
