2017, purchased ex-demo in early 2018.

I just thought I'd update this, seeing that people were very helpful with their advice and suggestions.

We ended up getting a five seater Prius Alpha, we decided that we couldn't justify the extra costs of getting a second hand Outlander Phev with relatively limited electric range. We put a roof rack on and did a three week camping trip around the South Island in the Prius. While it's definitely not the zippiest car when fully loaded it did fine and we're pretty happy with in, both in terms of space for the family and fuel efficiency.

Thanks to everyone for you suggestions and advice, I really appreciated it.

I was going to suggest a Prius with a roof rack or even towing a small trailer.
