@michaelmurfy hey mate, Yup there is some lag on connection but by the time I have backed out the garage and hit the road its working well, Plugging directly into head unit is pretty instant.

I would be interested to hear from somebody who has it standard in there car as to how long it takes to connect. Still not many around that come with wireless I don't think, in fact I think a lot still don't even come with it at all.

Curious on what you mean by simplified version of carplay as I have never seen that issue.

Scrolling around in maps seems fine and have never had music drop out once. Still happy with mine, I use google maps or waze as apple maps is still pretty crappy.

By "Simplified Carplay" this is what I mean - potentially Simplified was the wrong word for it, it is still standard Carplay.

Connecting straight to my car:

Connecting via the Dongle (Wireless):

On the Dongle the interface is slightly different. It also doesn't seem to matter what I am doing - if it is scrolling or anything on my Seltos this causes the music to break up and the animations to slow down (and take a while to catch up). I'm using an iPhone XS Max.

That's strange, mine drops into the multi panel display with icons down the left side not right side. Would take picture but car is in having new bumper put on.

Makes no difference on mine if directly plugged in or wireless.

I bought something similar from https://www.wirelesscarplay.com. It generates the alternative interface too — I actually prefer it (& had assumed it was an iOS update I hadn't noticed but clearly not).

It works pretty well. Saves mucking around taking the phone out, and generally connects in about 10s or so. I get the usual very occasional music playback stutter that seems to plague any bluetooth connection. And if I look carefully, the screen is slightly laggy if I e.g. scroll around in Maps. But other than that it's just as good as the wired connection with less hassle.

I think you will find that this is the standard layout as there are more Left Hand drive than Right Hand drive (ref GM and demise of Holden). So they are cost saving - miniscule though it might be. You can always contact them or On Line chat.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

@JaseNZ Eighteen months on from when you first got the device, I'm interested to know how it has panned out. Are you still using it, was it reliable and OK over the longer term, etc?

Also keen to see comments from others who have been using one more recently (but not the later Android version).

Thanks in advance.

I got one recently for my wife's car, while I have the AAWireless in my car.  She's said the CarPlay dongle is a bit iffy.  I haven't had any problems with it when I've driven her car though, I take my iPhone when I go in hers.  But she says sometimes it won't launch or won't connect.  She drives it multiple times a day so I think this might be a once a week kind of problem.

Thanks Guys. Some 'proper' reviews have reported various issues. I would like to avoid having to fiddle with it to get it to connect - if it's going to need that, I might as well just not buy one and continue to connect by cable each time. However, Jase sounds fairly satisfied and gehenna sounds partially happy. I'll think about it but will probably get one.

Mrs Code recently got a new car that has wireless CarPlay and that's a bit of pure luxury compared to having to plug my phone into my car each time. (But as mentioned in the OP, first world problem).

Kia ora, I have stopped using mine but it did function fine. The main reason I didn’t keep using it was the lag on voice calls. But it was kind of magic to just hop into the car and the wireless CarPlay starts up.
