We just bought a 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander VRX and I feel your pain.

As mentioned above, my Tesla does. It records using the Front, Rear and side indicator cameras that the car normally uses for Autopilot when driving.  The only extra hardware required is USB storage.

I've already seen how useful it will be, after this happened over the weekend:

They ended up coming back and leaving a note, potentially because it's becoming better known that Tesla's are recording.

Typical, people just bump and go.

How easy is it to find the owner after that kind of a "hit and run" here in NZ?

... for the same reason that although modern cars have built-in satnav and bluetooth and can sync to any smartphone, you still have to manually change the clock every time daylight saving comes and goes.

 

 

Not on  our two Mazdas .  The time updates as soon as the satnav  starts up. 

 

that gps kit can be a pain for older folk though.

Family had it and they spent weeks moaning that the clock kept resetting.

Every time they got in the car, they would put the clock forward to NZST, then when it started back up again it would go, oh i'm meant to be UTC!

Setting for that was actually quiet hidden..

Thats good of them.

I have to pay the excess until they get an admission of fault from the other party and they pay my insurance for the repairs at which point I get my excess refunded.

I would have thought that the video would be good enough proof that the damage was caused by them, I mean for your insurance company..

At a guess..Auto makers will be thinking about these advancements in their high end specs. Overtime it becomes the norm  e.g. traction control, ABS etc (there were still quite a number of cars in the late 2000's still without traction control as standard). 

So... key message here is "as is with tech, auto makers introduce incremental updates".  Else what point is it for them to go all in and include everything right now when they can squeeze it out over time?

I have no idea how or why the driver backed into you; that BMW has reverse parking sensors and they would’ve been screaming at that point (I drove a similar model for years).

Dunno about the Beemer, but the parking sensors on my Hyundai give so many false positives that I pretty much just tune them out now. I'd have it removed if I could. I've probably flattened half a dozen toddlers and not known it.

OTOH, the backing cameras make it very easy not to bump into stuff.

The we could plug in car cams with a very short cable and a socket on top of the instrument cluster or similar to plug in radar detectors or charge phones. ??

Get rid of the birds nest of cables running down from of radio and controllers to the cig lighter in front of the hear stick.

Cant be too expensive considering the costs of those of those USB transformers who buy I'm shops. Just make them 5V 2.4A...

The latest update of the Ford Ranger (MY19.75 I think) now has a USB port on the back of the rear view mirror, which enables the owner to power any compatible windscreen mounted device easily and without the dangling cord issue that has plagued the first world for so long....

I've had radar detectors for over twenty years windscreen mounted and now dash cams, all hardwired - never a cord or wire to be seen.

Apparently not? I might push a bit more and see. I think it's a results of NZ insurance companies having a "Knock for Knock" agreement.

There are so many things that should be on cars as standard that aren't.

 

I could never survive having another car that didn't have automatic lights and wipers. Auto lighting is probably a 20c light sensor, would do wonders for road safety if more vehicles had lights that were on during low light or poor weather and and yet it only appears on high end vehicles.

 

Possibly less so since daylight running lights became a legal requirement in places like the EU where many cars are made.

I had one hardwired in my last car. I have not done the current one yet because the only place I trust to do it correctly is in Wellington and I have not been there with sufficient time and the car in the 16 months since I bought the car! At this rate I will be be biffing the car before I get that done.

My wife parks her car at the station each workday. That car has accumulated more dings and scratches from mystery drivers than would appear possible. Many seem to think whacking the door open into the side of someone else's care is perfectly acceptable.

Last time I came home with her, one was parked so close on the driver's side, she had to get in on the other side and crawl over! I left a note saying "Thanks for parking so considerately. Next time I will bring a can opener so I can get in!"
