This kindof assumes that drowning valleys and making rivers unlivable for animals and birds is good for the environment.

No, it kind of assumes that CC is the largest existential threat to have faced humanity, which is the message continuously being touted on the media - so much so that I am actually beginning to believe it.

And if we will only accept solutions to it that have no downside, we might as well stop bothering and start driving V8s again.  I sometimes wonder what the Green Party reaction would be if someone developed an amazing crop that reduced cow emissions to zero and was easily converted to bio-diesel, but depended on genetic engineering.

A few thousand people buying Nissan leafs instead of Toyota Corollas and using recyclable shopping bags is just peeing into the wind

Its been covered before in one thread or another on the subject, but the basic points are: 1) the infrastructure to redirect its power supply to the national grid doesn't exist and would require costly investment (in the hundreds of millions I think I have read previously); and 2) the impact to the local economy is not negligible in terms of revenue and jobs.

Yeah, it has an impact environmentally, but it's a complex issue and not as simple as just 1. turn it off 2. hook up the Leafs 3. Profit $$$

This article seems to be mostly on-point.

I read it was 600 million.I think that might include some form of payout to Rio Tinto, as in "here is the got out of Dodge cheque"

Also I think they employ 900 people? And people down there that service those people and Tiwia Point. I was down there recently, hey its not that big, from the Bluff lookout. Went there, yes it's big.
