The Rain-X has improved the noise, but it's still there sometimes and is still annoying. It's mostly the first few wipes, or when it's light rain and the windscreen is only moderately wet. So I guess I try replacing the blades.

Can anyone recommend good blades? We have Trico Force now, they were great on the original windscreen, but squeaky the moment we had the replacement put in. I've had Bosch wipers in the past but they're too difficult to fit, I gave up and had a mechanic do it, so won't get them again. Any suggestions on good wipers that are less likely to squeak?

Are you using ones with or without a metal rail? I found the metal-less ones too stiff, but the softer rubber that requires a metal rail much quieter and better. I can't recall the exact brand, but I've had good success with whatever repco/supercheap had on the shelf at the time.

I tend to buy the all in one units where you replace the whole fitting, not just the little rubber bit.

Sounds like a waste of money if the whole fitting is in otherwise good order. It's not too difficult to change just the rubber. Slide the old one out, break the metal strip to length (it has areas to break it) making sure it's slightly longer than your fitting. Cut the rubber with sidecutters (slightly longer than the metal) then slide it back into the assembly.

I understand the process, I do that for my older Corolla. Modern vehicles don't seem to come with refillable wiper blades, at least ours didn't.

I solved this by buying new wipers - I got the same wipers again, Trico Force from Repco. This is in addition to using Rain-X Glass Water Repellent on the windscreen, but the new wipers may have solved it by itself.

The guy in repco said new windscreens aren't as smooth as older ones, and that older wipers don't work so well with them. That makes sense given putting Rain-X on helped - I assume that helped smooth things out.

So in conclusion, if you have squeaky wiper blades on a new windscreen:

Could use WD40 to clean the blades.
