No - unless you can prove who is driving the NZ cops don't care/can't use the footage.

It's worse than that, I sent in crystal clear dashcam footage of an idiot drifting (multiple drifts, not one overzealous corner) towards oncoming traffic across both lanes of a city street including a frame where you could see the driver and identify the plate.

Not interested.

For those of us with dodgy car cam footage who expect police to act on.

Are we happy to turn up in court as a prosecution witness to confirm the footage ?

In most cases no, I am not. I'm aware that's selfish and hypocritical.

I apologise profusely for expecting clearly dangerous and illegal reasonably documented behaviour to be acted on by the police.

It's not that easy to say giving a video to police is enough.

The defence would just say it's a fake video and without you being prepared to legally swear/ sign to that affect the police wont get involved as it's a waste of time.

I've been a witness to a crime and despite writing it all down and signing it etc, I still had to appear in court to be questioned by the defence lawyer.

To be consistent, if we expect the police to act on our driving videos we have to be prepared to stand in court. If not then its understandable why police wont do anything official.

It will just get thrown out by defence

The thing is, that's _clearly_ not true. The action (or inaction here) is not completely governed by principle or law. Imagine for a tragic moment that someone had been struck and killed and for some implausible reason I wasn't able to stay at the scene of the crime (Let's say I was a passenger in a passing plane with a huge zoom) and I sent the video in anonymously. It's my belief that the police would use the information in the video (my miracle camera caught the license plate) to assist with their enquiries.

The severity of consequences are a better predictor as to whether the police will action anything - so my contention is that dangerous drifting down a road in Christchurch into oncoming traffic (and not have an accident) isn't considered important enough to proactively chase down.

Now my theoretical situation about is definitely stupid - but I don't think the point is. There are clearly situations where dangerous and illegal behaviour won't be pursued by the police, even when they are made aware of it.

It's worth pointing out that I witnessed this behaviour about 3 months before and 2 blocks away from where an idiot boy racer was drifting out of Linwood mall and killed a child when he lost control and hit them. It wasn't the same car or person - but without a serious consequence there's not enough resource to deal with dangerous drivers.

Yes but most videos aren't massive smashes involving deaths etc the return on work of police is different

There people are commenting on red light ignoring and stupid behaviour and if we want action on these things we have to be prepared to make official complaints and put our name to them and be prepared to testify otherwise all these videos are just poor car driving titillation porn.

Often these videos are the sole evidence of poor driving. Unlike a major smash where theres wreckage, tiremarks other witnesses medical reports etc

But approaching police and being witness is scary. Did you need to sign statements for the crash you witnessed?

Maybe we should lobby for law change to give car cam footage more weight in prosecutions?

Are there lawyers to can comment ?
