Just sold a BMW on facebook.. Was asking for a reasonable figure.. Above market rate.
Waited for someone to message me who was really keen to inspect it before he even spoke of money or anything. He drove up from auckland on Monday to Whangarei.. Was waiting for me after work.
He's meeting me for hand over on Saturday. I had 30 others who were also "keen"

+1 to this.  Loads of the younger generation use FB marketplace rather than trademe for buying and selling cars.

Consider getting an AA report done yourself, few hundred dollars and might tempt someone to come look at it.

As to your initial question, I know 2 people who used this type of service and on both occasions they agreed a price and on the day of pickup the company bought way less cash and said take it or leave it.  They know you have likely exhausted all other selling efforts and are resigned to getting rid of it and will probably accept their offer (both my friends did).

Yeah it is pretty easy to tell who is going to be a low baller at the last minute and who is not.
First and only person who did that to me I met them to do a transaction for a car in Mercer - They left $500 poorer and didn't get a car.

The purchaser is around 35 in this example and I have a written agreement for value, meeting location, small deposit etc etc.

Cheers

Batman:

buying

- specific car model

- price

- got a friend to check it out and report

- willing to take a risk

So that’s not really ‘sight unseen’?

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Thanks for the replies; car hasn't gone up yet, engine light came back on... we've been chasing a vacuum leak which we thought was fixed but its still present... it had cam gaskets done this year and a bunch of other work and with the normal crankcase pressure areas changed (breather pipe, valve seals etc.) the mechanic has agreed it is 100% related to the cam gaskets so its going back in to fix... the N62 V8 engine is quite sensitive to imbalances across the two banks and so its thrown the air mix sensor on bank 1 again.. oh well, its getting done for free as its related to previous work!
