There is no neutral as such, its a constant propulsion out the back when the jets engaged you are going to go forward, the bucket has two options. reverse the flow back under the ski for reverse, or out the sides for a "neutral"

It will also dump down as a sea brake if needed, that works extremely well.

Tides/wind etc all factor in of course

thanks

Can I also be a fun sucker and suggest before you use a jet ski you learn the give way rules of the sea (if you don't know them already).

They are different from the road.

Isn't the rule the jet ski goes wherever they want?

1024kb: "Wife wants me to look at jetskis ..."

Wife sounds like a very cool lady.

tried to get me sky diving and bungee jumping in the early days ...

Heh, that might have been for different reasons. Did she innocently ask what your life insurance policies were somewhat prior? :)

> Note that at full power some of the flagship jetskis (i.e. Sea-Doo RXT-X RS 300) can use in the area of 95L/hr of high octane petrol.

I own one of the above.. Most of the time it uses about 13L/hr (50 - 60Km /h).. 3L/hr idling.

Do you really want people on them the way your average person behaves, when you can't hear it coming?

Painfully true. Wonder if there is any chance of requiring a driving test ; ).

Call me old school, but for me a key part of boating is the enjoyment of peace and quiet of an anchorage in a natural setting. That's why I vehemently detest jet-skis.  To me they are as intrusive and inconsiderate as another modern "recreational" activity - the camera drones over my back yard. But everyone to their own, I guess.

I reckon that you've either got it or you don't with being able to handle a jet-ski properly. It's one of those nature things, understanding & controlling the power slide that looks so close to the edge but isn't dangerous at all. Kinda like dancing between man & machine, smooth & slippery.

Jet-skiis can hurtle toward the shore at serious speed (ski lane only), then twist & turn, spin the hull 180 degrees & hit the gas again, using the power as a brake this time, delivering a combination of white-knuckle ride with nice soft landing. Unless you don't understand the water propulsion system, in which case you'll just idle on in & park up like a responsible citizen.

I remember a good mate who could drive the wheels off a cars & knew how to drive a ski boat well, running straight over me on a loaner jet ski because it just didn't click in his head how to power off, point & power on to change direction. I was sitting on my Sea Doo taking a break off Motuihe Island, he decided to repeat the rooster-tail that I'd just soaked him with. Instead, zoned out & kept on coming right at & then up & over me. Knocked me out momentarily, & scared him off jet-skiis for years afterwards.

There's still the requirement for high level fitness & endurance strength for the pilot too. Smashing 1100cc through an offshore break is awesome fun but physically draining. You'll eat the fridge for energy recovery.

Today, my attitude has changed, environmental concerns tell me that the whole burning copious quantities of 2-stroke fuel purely for recreation thing isn't quite right.

Thanks for all the comments, a few things to chew on first.

I can reverse a trailer onto windy narrow bushy paths ... I can drift a mountain bike sideways  ... so I understand what you mean by handling the jetski is different from driving a front wheel steered car - thanks for that point, I didn't think about that

As to environmental pollution - i don't keep cows, don't eat a lot of meat, don't air travel, don't buy new iphones/anything every few months, don't drive more than a few Ks every week, don't mow my lawns, don't buy bottled/packaged/takeaway drinks 6 times a day, bbq, use a fireplace, do buy a lot of secondhand stuff, so I don't think a jetski a few days every summer can be compared to those who drive Jaguar I-Paces but actually cause more pollution in other aspects.

Re noise pollution - interesting point as I have heard cars motorcycles and powered boats nearby that actually do annoy me lol -

Ref bolded above

This is the old “Double Cheese Burger with a Diet Coke” argument.

It either matters or it doesn’t. If it really matters there is a lot of fun to be had from a windsurfer or small yacht. If it doesn’t matter, just buy a JetSki and enjoy yourself. But don’t justify it by only being ‘a bit pregnant’.

It's not the jet-skis that are the problem.  It's too many of the owners/riders who seem to be complete dicks.  Some water skiers are worse - desperately wanting to find flat water when the wind gets up - so they head to anchorages and small quiet bays where (by law) they should not be.

I'm saving for an electric Jetski, instant torque, very fast, cheap to run! QUIET!

"Taiga Motors’ Orca is a $24,000 electric watercraft with a two-hour battery"

$5 to fill. 60km range.
