I think I may have come off a bit negative about turtle wax. It is worth what it costs, but for most scenario’s doesn’t add much. The whole wax/coating/wrap industry is full of hype over substance, and turtle wax has bought into that.

So if the price of turtle wax sounds good, go for it - if you don’t mind spending $2,800 for a tub of wax, well that’s fine too.

BlinkyBill:

Turtle Wax? At absolute best, it’s ... adequate; sounds like someone has bought into the marketing hype. Also the type of car is irrelevant, albeit some paints are harder than others - but so what?

It’s all about what you want to achieve and how much do you want to spend for that?

For most people with most cars the clear coat is fine and good enough. Some people want to polish their cars every week - in this case a deep liquid-vibe wax might be a good investment (you don’t wax every week). Some people want a deeper shine to their paint, and easier cleaning - perhaps go with a ceramic coating.

Wraps? I’m not convinced unless you are looking to change the colour (I wrapped one of my cars to get a gunmetal matte, and it looks great, but only limited protection against stone chips).

Meguirs is better than turtle wax.

I would say figure out what you want to achieve, avoid the big brand hype, and expect to spend some $.

Haven't had time to look into the various brands. In that light I am quite satisfied with getting one that is adequate.

My cars live outside, having some wax on them (usually just a wash & wax single step product) seems to make things like seads and bird poo easier to wash off.

Comments regarding type of car were made with regards to resale. For something like a Corolla, there is unlikely to be a difference in resale value between good and excellent paint condition, but for something like a Porsche, buyers may be willing to pay a premium for a used car which has it's paint in truly excellent condition.

Regarding the paint, I have been a bit scared to run a buffer and speed compound on the Leaf, so havn't done so yet (but it could do with it).

Never had a wrapped vehicle, As you say having a custom color would be the main appeal, but I imagine it would also keep the surface free of minor scratches and the likes. Is it so thin stone's chip through it?

$21 for the bottle I linked at repco. Could well have got it on sale, I can't recall. As with many retail environments, hard to tell the best auto care products apart in a shop.

I don't have any brand allegiance. Have a bit of Mothers & Meguiar's stuff too. Just pick up what catches my eye and where the description sounds like it will match my needs.

Can I ask if you got a decent % off RRP?

I was surprised how much I had off RRP. I managed to get about 7% off the listed price on the website driveaway.

I have decided, that it is best not to care too much about the paintwork and for your own sanity, just accept it is going to go bad fast - in Auckland at least. No ceramic coating is going to make up for the trashing and abuse others are going to inflict on it in car parks. Within a year mine was missing paint off of all side panels from door strikes, and the bonnet has a big gouge in it from what appears to have been a head-on with a supermarket shopping trolley :-(

Peoples manners are so bad.

Yes I am, most definitely. I look after my possessions and if it means taking two car parks to ensure my car doesn't end up knocked about I will. I pay too much hard earned money to to buy a car allow other people to put dents in my car. I keep my cars much longer than most people and I take pride in having them look tidy. I have an 18 year old car that is in very tidy condition.

So do you also do this double parking thing in free car parks like at the supermarket? You appear to partly justify doing this on the basis you're paying for two parks (which still potentially means someone else misses out on a park), but interested to know if you do the same when the 'I paid for it' argument can't apply...

On the topic of paint protection, I own a Tesla and it seems to be very popular to get them wrapped in protection film. However, at the cost of nearly $5k to do the whole car I really don't see the worth. Over the last year I've had one or two stone chips on the front which I've touched up with a touch up kit and if things get really bad I could get a few resprays for that $5k

Could everyone get calm right about now and go back to the original topic "Thoughts on the Dura-Seal Ceramic Coatings when buying a new car?" or everyone gets a good seven days in the cooler.

I have just removed a page of off-topic replies on how/where to park and public shaming.
