Leave nothing in it and insure it.

Handsomedan:

Vitz is a great little car. Toured the Sth Island in an Echo (NZ new version of the Vitz) in the early 2000's.

Don't compare them. Japan has some totally anemic engine options available that should be laughed at, low CC no turbo things that even on 98 can barely make it up the motorway towards grevele road at a decent speed if the traffic slows to a stop they cant accelerate up the hill safely.

There are even worse options in the swift. CVT on something more at home in a lawnmower.

North Shore here. I parked on the street at an old flat and I had a side window smashed, had the car egged a few times and the wing mirror smashed off by what I believe was a passing truck.

Hope for the best, expect the worst. Get insurance. Good luck! 😁

Oh man! That sucks. But I mean that’s just down to pure back luck right? Unless your window was smashed because something inside looked interesting? That’s what I’m worried about - having a car with nothing in it but still get unlucky.

I live in Bayview on the North Shore and our local Facebook page probably averages one car break-in report a week.

Definitely get good insurance, with a glass cover, and also a steering wheel lock to deter thieves.

Demios are also coffin on wheels. Recommend valuing your safety a bit more.

It's bad luck any time something bad happens to your car 😉 That particular occasion, some miscreant had walked down the road smashing car windows. Didn't take anything. Just smashed windows.

Should note that risk varies substantially by the nature of the road. A sleepy residential road in a more expensive neighborhood poses relatively less risk than a busy arterial, rural road, industrial road, an area near bars, or an area known for higher crime.

I had a car parked on a residential dead end road for a couple of years. Only thing that happened to it was that I picked up a massive dent in the rear door from where I assume a truck or lifted 4x4 cocked up their three point turn and crashed into it. (Road had no turning circle at the end).

But as others have said, if you are asking the question, you probiably don't have a choice. Buy something with an immobilizer, but otherwise similar to other cars on the street. Make absolutely sure the car is left completly empty overnight. Could even go as far to leave the glove box and center console open so a potential thief can see they are empty without breaking a window. Theft from cars is far more common that theft of car's.
