I'd take a Subaru every day of the week, twice on Sundays. Also the Ford Escape is pretty decent value and well kitted out as per @Billgates . One of my staff bought a Jeep for his wife. She loves it, but it's in at the shop a surprising amount. Having said that, the Forrester turbo my inlaws had was pretty expensive after a few years of owning it (8 Years total I think). Little things that were very expensive.

I'd echo others comments around commitment to the market, though Jeep has been here a while. A work colleague belonged to a 4WD club and they had lots of jeeps in that group, though the more expensive high end ones. They all swore by them.

Overall, I'd still take the Subaru. Much better chance of a better longer term outcome with Subaru NZ having been here for quite a while. They can be a bit hard nosed to deal with, but the CGA has teeth.

There's plenty of Jeep owner horror stories out there on the web, including dozens in Australia that I've come across on YouTube:

Should you buy a Jeep in 2021?

Jeep spare parts & repair fiasco

Man destroys his lemon Jeep

Teg Sethi - "I made a mistake and bought a Jeep" song

I'm sure there are more, but these should get you started...

alasta:

Yobbos steal old cars that lack modern security features, and organised crime groups go after Porches and Lamborghinis.

If you are buying a new vehicle from a mainstream marque then I wouldn't be worrying about theft risk.

A comment devoid of facts.

According the NZ Police, who publish their data, the most stolen vehicle in NZ is ... the Toyota Hilux, and in 2019 no Lamborghini’s were stolen. According to the Porsche Owners Group, there is no targeting of Porsches by ‘organised crime groups’ in New Zealand.

Only one Subaru in the top 10 being the Impreza.

Agree. Worry about the likely, ie the Jeep will be a money pit, rather than the unlikely, eg the Forester will be stolen.

I have a 2020 Subaru Forester Sport Plus, which is pretty much identical to the X sport, except for the funky trim and the Dual X-Mode ( 2020 version does not have the Deep Snow/Mud option)

I did an agonising amount of research before making my purchase, and for that price range and class, you will be hard pressed to find another car that would top the forester in safety.

Even though the seats are fabric, they do have seat heaters on them

It comes with a comprehensive suite of safety features, including parking sensors and park assist, rear cross traffic alert, Auto emergency braking (one of the best in its class) and Reverse auto emergency breaking.

And after driving it for over year, I can confirm that it is worth the purchase price. If you are a cash buyer, you should be able to negotiate down the dealer's cost of financing from the purchase price.

I intend to keep my forester for at least five years, and I think, in 5 years time, the forester will retain better value than than the compass.

Best hidden feature no one knows about:  PIN code access. If you want to go for a swim etc, you can leave your keys in the glove box, lock the car,  and unlock it using the PIN code when you are back.  No need to carry the keys around.

Servicing tends to be dearer for Subaru, and the forester needs a service every 10 months.

You haven't watched John cardogan's episode on the jeep owner who complained about the hose replacement that cost AUD 4500...

Does the NZ forester have Starlink connected service that allow to track this vehicle on a mobile App as shown on some overseas Subaru videos?

On my Outback - in Canada - Starlink says "service only available in the Continental U.S., Alaska, Hawaii, District of Columbia and Canada".
I have both it and the car's SiriusXM satellite radio/nav connection inactive, as after the first year they're extra cost subscriptions and hard to justify.
"Starlink" is a misnomer as it stops working when you lose cell reception ie. almost anywhere in the Rockies..

Also - in regard to your OP - my wife has a Jeep Compass (LHD Mexico built, as opposed to RHD which I think are India built)
We both need AWD vehicles here due to snow & ice in winter.

It's had ongoing issues with electrical/computer faults. It's a good week when a warning light doesn't at least appear then, usually, magically disappear again.
A month ago it left her stranded in -28 degree weather. Just refused to start after work. There was a 4 hour wait for roadside assistance.
We'll be selling it before the extended warranty expires.

And - sit in one and see how big of a blind spot the rear pillars create.
The parkview reversing cam was an option at her trim level ("North") but it would be hard to reverse without it.

I reckon buy the Subie.

Many thanks for all the advice. I need to look at my finances and quickly make s decision.

Does the red color have less resale value than white?

Based on this self-selected response of one, I'd never look at buying a white car!
It would be interesting to see how colour preference has changed over the years. I imagine the introduction of a wider range of colours, more interesting colours (eg Mazda's popular red) and better quality paint and finish (vs the '80s and '90s) has encouraged people to look beyond the taxi/tradie look of white vehicles.
