Toyota 86?

I hear they are a bit under powered, but I've never driven one. Worth a look for sure.

Narrator: it wasn't worth the look

They are definitely not hot

Thought of a WRX, or honda Civic Type R?

Lexus ISF would be fun but for your budget you probably wouldnt get 2012+

My partner had an m135i and it was AMAZING, and cost a FORTUNE to fix.

There was a whole other thread on VW and DSGs, it seems the consensus is that they have issues and can be expensive to repair and VW can be difficult to deal with.  It put us off getting the gti golf.

Civic Type R I don't really like the bubble shape, the new ones are way out of budget, and it looks like Honda let a 15 year old loose in the design department. I used to have a 98 Spec DC2 Type R and honestly it was the most fun car I've owned. Not the quickest, but the most fun for sure.

WRX is not a bad shout, the Levorg things look quite good.

I've driven the new Civic Type R and it's very quick, didn't get much of a chance to chuck it round but it was nice to drive a normal manual again.

If you can live with the looks that is, some colours look better than others.

The blue was nice.

Much like the blade master, absolutely perfect if it wasn't for the safety rating.

"Where have all the fun car's gone"

In short, a combination of emissions laws & consumer preferences mean they are harder to come by.

My take is that the car classes that traditionally were very slow & had poor handling (i.e. economy hatches & utes), now have improved to a level where they are acceptable. Couple this with increased urbanization, more traffic and heavier policing, plus the SUV & ute fashion trend, and there is a lot less demand to performance cars. Seems the demographic which traditionally purchased the likes of Commodores / falcons has moved across to ute's and larger SUV's.

Still there are some interesting options if you can flex your requirements a little;

  • Merc A45 AMG. a 2013 is asking $38k. 265kW AWD in a hatchback.
  • Renalt Megane RS 265 CUP: 2014 is asking $24k. 195kW, and 0-100 of 6.0s
  • Lexus is350. A 2013 is asking $32500. 234kW RWD small luxary sports sedan.
  • Nissan 370z. a 2010 is asking $30k. 241kW Rwd coup (2 seater).

[edit] - Could add the levorg into the Mix. Sensible, practical car which goes like stink.

Always found these attractive looking. Should shift as well. Might get a bit of a bill if something breaks though -

A4 B8 with the 2.0 twin turbo and 7 stage auto? My wife has one and it's a good drive.

Still a bit of euro tax but it's a fun car.

What year are those? When I got mine (2010 3l tdi). I took a 2l for a drive and it was front wheel drive and not sure I could fee any turbo let alone twin .

But with a turbo or two yes they are fun.

My wife's one is 2013 quattro. It's a middle East model so may not be available in NZ.

They made them with all sorts of variants for different markets.

Just remember, the current WRX is not the car it once was, and in auto form, both it and the Levorg use a CVT. The 2010 - 2014 (previous shape post-facelift) WRX is massively quicker and more fun than the current ones, if you're happy with a manual transmission. By all means, drive them, see what you think, but they are not fast by modern standards. If you really want a wagon, consider an S4 Avant.
